On a sweltering day like this all the children have had to go in full uniform

By full uniform I mean pinafores/skirts/trousers, long sleeved shirts and ties and knee length socks rather than summer dresses, shorts and polo shirts. This is because it is prize giving today.

I think it is ridiculous. Dd isn't affected yet as she is only in nursery but I am already composing my letter of complaint in my head ready for next year.

What is the point of summer uniform. If it isn;t smart enought for prize giving they should change it to one that is.

almost a H&S issue - kids overheat quite easily.

juuule · 04/07/2006 20:45

They have had to wear their sweatshirts, too, at our secondary school.

poisson · 04/07/2006 20:46

well it a bloody stupid schhool imo

golds · 04/07/2006 20:50

at our high school they have to wear their blazers all the time.

dd had her sports day yesterday afternoon, she came out of school complaining of feeling sick, there was no shade at all, they really should have cancelled it. They just don't think sometimes

waterfalls · 04/07/2006 20:50

my ds school is great for thinking ahead with the heat etc, for example half the school were supposed to have thier sports day tomorrow, but it has been cancelled due to it being too hot.

WellKnownMemorablePeachyClair · 04/07/2006 20:54

How about saying no? I happily doctored the boys uniform, no socks, just the basic- no way was I sending them in more than they needed.

I ahve memories of standing outside Welsl cathedral for hours in this sort of heat in nursing cadet uniform and just watching the other kids drop like flies. I remember how sick I felt it, tho I kept going- no way do I want that for my kids.

LadyTophamHatt · 04/07/2006 20:56

I just wouldn't do it....it's ridiculous IMO.

I bet the teachers are dressed for winter!!??

mumeeee · 05/07/2006 22:38

At my daughters high school they don't have to ear thire sweatshirts in the summer term.

cazzybabs · 05/07/2006 22:42

Tis the same at my school - I feel so sorry for my class amd theya re not allowed to take off their blazers! I am not wearing full winter clothing but a sleaveless smart dress!

JanH · 05/07/2006 22:43

Ours has let them wear short-sleeved shirts and no tie in the really hot weather, which is surprisingly civilised (there is a new (female) head who actually seems interested in the kids, unlike the last one).

In weather like this I think thin poly-cotton shirts will actually be cooler than polo shirts. Making them wear sweatshirts or blazers is just perverse.

Can't believe the madness here. Dd goes to a perfectly respectable grammar school, and has not taken jumper or blazer for ages. Yes there's a strict dress code but it's sensible. I remember this from teaching - crappy comps where useless heads thought compulsary blazer wearing in heatwaves wold impose order on pupils.

hamsters · 05/07/2006 23:17

Local private school, well-established, considered to be very traditional, allows summer dress of open-necked white shirts (can be short sleeved or with long sleeves rolled up). No tie, no blazer. Seems sensible to me. Hot kids can't possibly concentrate on what they're meant to be doing.

wangle99 · 06/07/2006 12:07

DD has a 'blazer day' next Wednesday (last day of term), she is wearing it over a summer dress and they were instructed not to wear their jumpers as well.

Bozza · 06/07/2006 12:15

It is silly. When I read the title I thought "yeah and.." having sent DS to school in shorts and polo shirt and socks and school shoes - what I consider full uniform. But then I read your post and realised the difference.

Riddo · 06/07/2006 12:57

I kept my dd (11) off school on sports days because they had to sit outside ALL DAY in the sun waiting for their turn to compete. She did have a drs appt but it was over by 10.30. She is very fair and feels sick in the sun after half an hour.

It must be a H&S issue to force them into winter clothes in this heat.

Riddo · 06/07/2006 12:57

day not days - thankfully they only had one
