My DD will be 3 in September 2007, does she start school then or in January?

I have her names down in 3 schools

-a catholic one, which I went to
-a Welsh school
-a very very good primary

i will be happy with any of those choices, but dont know when she will start

wouldn't she start school in 2008 when she is 4?
LEA's have different policies on this, so your best bet is to call them up or look it up on their website

QuinoaPolice · 28/06/2006 19:45

no they start nursery when they are 3 near me

I will ring my LEA thought someone on here may know

I'm still very confused about this, DS was born in February 2003 and I was expecting he would start on September 2007, but I have been told by the slightly rude school secretary that he is meant to start on September 2008. I didn't dare to ask her again after the response I got when I said that the headmaster had told me DS was to start on 2007... Now, why do I want to send him to that school???

hana · 28/06/2006 19:48

most nurseries if they have places will let 3 year olds start after they turn 3 - but the funding doesn't kick in until the term after they turn 3
my daughter turned 3 in Sept and started nursery a week later - she's done 6 terms now

QuinoaPolice · 28/06/2006 19:50

this is a minefield already

I hope she gets into one of my 3 choices, but if push comes to shove, Ill put her in one of their nurseries then wait for a place in one of my prefered ones

And I thought weaning was hard

Piffle · 28/06/2006 19:57

Piffle · 28/06/2006 19:58

September 05
damn it!

Kaz33 · 28/06/2006 19:58

Chandra, my DS2 who is May 2003 will start school in Sept 2007, ie: the year he is 4 as long as it falls before Sept.

My DS1 turned 4 in August and started that September.

Different LEA's have different policies, if we had still lived in London he would have started in Jan 2008 as he was a summer baby.

Piffle · 28/06/2006 19:58

arggh what is wrong with me
dd born oct 02, due to start school sept 07
End of
GRRRRRRRRRRR

Greensleeves · 28/06/2006 20:01

I started a thread about this the other day ...am still confused (am thick )

ds1 will be 4 on 29th September - he is at nursery school 5 mornings a week (no formal teaching, just play, not attached to a school) I have been told he won't be able to start school until September 2007, when he is virtually 5.

Chandra · 28/06/2006 20:04

Thanks Kaz33, I will go to talk to the headmaster again.

QuinoaPolice · 28/06/2006 20:04

I dont even know if Ill send her, just turned 3 is VERY young.

Looked on my local councils website, but its vague to say the least!

Friday is my day off so Ill ring them then or go down to the guildhall and speak to someone

hana · 28/06/2006 20:06

it is young
dd started on 3 mornings a week, and this year did 4 mornings
it's been fab for her and she can't wait to start school in sept

Greensleeves · 28/06/2006 20:07

You don't have to send her if you don't want to Boris, she won't be the only one... I know loads of parents who would say 3 is too young to start formal education. It's your decision.

QuinoaPolice · 28/06/2006 20:10

I just looked at the preschool section of the education bit on here

I need to lie down in a dark room for a bit to block out the words
"funding"

"lea"

"firstchoice"

"competitive mogelling mothers"
out of my head

OP posts:
hana · 28/06/2006 20:10

preschool/nursery isnt' really formal though, is it? all the bumph they send home says how it's all about play and discovery etc etc
isn't it?

Piffle · 28/06/2006 20:12

I've taken dd out of her nursery as they intend to start formal pre schooling on her come september
UGH! Too young, she is not ready
So I've packed her off to Montessori instead unti she is 6
Ha!
The people that are statementing dd are hating me right now
GREAT!!!!

waterfalls · 28/06/2006 20:20

I think they start pre-school the term after their 3rd birthday, my dts will be 3 in December, but I dont want them to start in January, would rather leave it til next September.

Greensleeves · 28/06/2006 20:34

Now we come to mention it, I don't really understand the whole pre-school/nursery/playschool thing either Ds1 was 3 in September, so he's 3.9 now. He started "nursery school" in January, he goes five mornings a week and it's funded by the LEA although not attached to a school, it's part of the new "Children's Centre" that's just been set up here in Exeter. They sent a load of bumph about "learning through play" and the "foundation curriculum for under-5s" but basically what they do is supervised play - the usual painting, sand, water play, home corner, construction toys, book corner, snack-time, some group-times with a key-worker, stories and group activities etc. So is that pre-school? Or nursery? And do the nurseries/pre-schools attached to schools do the same, or do they do formal teaching? What's "reception" then? And what do I do with him, just leave him there until September 2007? Even though he started in January?

My head is totally up my @ss on this one I'm afraid - clear as mud

Piffle · 28/06/2006 20:38

our nursery starts late for pre school, dd was 3 last october but they do not start until a year before theya re due to enter school
Anyroad up for me its too young - well for my dd it is, some kids are ready, some aren't
