Was speaking to my SIL yesterday and she said her 9 year old dd read her report yesterday, its not come home yet. She is in Year 5 and I believe they mark how the expected targets are, ie, should be a 5 if you are in Year 5, etc. Anyway her Mum told me that she has got 5 for art, 4 for english and 3 for maths. At the end of last year her maths wasnt good but she apparently worked on it a little and all was ok, but if she has the ability of a year 3 child for maths surely this isnt the case. My children arent this old so I dont know whats normal and what isnt for this age of childs report. If it were my child I would be concerned but she didnt seem worried. Should the school help or more. What advice would you give?

It doesn't work quite like that pepsi. I'm trying to find a site that explains it clearly, but it's hard! Have a look here From what I can tell, level 3 at 7 is above expectations but at 11 is below. So at 9 it should be average? So the level 5 at Art is really really good (beyond expectations of an 11 year old) and English is at the level of an 11 yr old! I think she's actually got a really good report

HTH!

I would advise her to wait until she sees the report herself, as the 9 yr-old may not have remembered correctly. And check whether the levels used are the national curriculum levels (it sounds as though they are.) The "standards for achievement" are:
Target for end of yr2 is level 2
Target for end of yr4 is level 3
Target for end of yr6 is level 4

Most schools have a system for making appointments to discuss reports if parents want it. But it might make more sense to have an early discussion with her new yr6 teacher next year as to what to do to boost her Maths a bit, if it needs it.
Target for end of yr9 (I think) is level 5

think she's probably talking about levels, not years, in which case 5 is fantastic, 4 is good and 3 is ok. (suspect this is what dd1 will get this year - she's in yr5 also). The avg will be a level4 by end of NEXT yr.

Lowest target for end of year 9 is a 5 in English Maths and Science. Government wants all children to reach a level 5. Wants ever more kids to reach a 6.

ATM, ball park figures (obviously some children will vary as learning is such an individual thing), level 4 a the end of year 6 = level 5 at the end of year 9 = 5 A* to C grades at GCSE (or Btec etc equivalent. Less than a 5 at the end of y9 less than 5, more than a 5, more than % A8 to C grades.

3c's are good, Shopping! Kind of at the top end of where you would ideally like them to be...like a top average if that makes sense!

I'd be happy with a 3C (as I say kind of average / top average - many of my year 3's are still in the 2's) 3B, very good; 3A, even better (many year 4's get 3B's/ 3A's) and 4 is excellent for a year 3 child.

If she were my child I'd be very pleased with those results! Well done

Could I just ask, my daughter has just finished Year 2. What is the scoring 2a 2b and 2c. Is 2c the top? Why is it so confusing?

m1m1rie · 15/07/2006 22:02

Yr 2 SATs are expected to reach a level within the twos. Therefore, 2b, slap bang in the middle,is the average with 2a being just above average and 2c just below, but still perfectly acceptable. Incidentally, DD1 achieved 2a for maths in Yr 2, and 3c in Yr6 . I think this is a terrible indictment of her school. She moved to middle school in yr 5 and, with 166 children in her year group has just slipped between the floorboards, metaphorically speaking. I am appalled as I would have said, at Primary level at least, maths was her strong subject. She got 4s for just about everything else this time with one 5 for her reading. She has always had trouble with her maths teacher and this has to be the ultimate letdown. Can't say I'm sorry we are moving to another area during the summer, and she will be attending a different school entirely.
