Dragon school

Anyone here have DC's at the Dragon? I know it's meant to be the biggest prep school in the country and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It's a big school but does anyone have any info on class sizes, extracurricular activities, etc? Are the class sizes still kept small even though it's a big school?

A girl I work with had/has two very different DC's at Dragon she thinks its a fab school it stretched the very able one and supports the less bright anxious one. I know quite a few children who've been there (again all different personalities/abilities) all talk positively about it. It also has a good record for scholarships into top schools.
The only thing I have heard is that it's largely a day school now but this might not be an issue for you.

Interesting how the Dragon school is labelled as largely a day school. In actual fact its size means that there are over 50 boys in the two year 7/8 boy boarding houses alone, 8 other junior and middle boarding houses with at least 20 per house and they are all full boarders at that school. Quite a few will go out on Sundays but a large number stay in. From what I hear the boarders regard themselves as a major and central part of the school and are able to take full advantage of the myriad of activities that are possible there. Dragon leavers that I have talked to all seem to have relished being part of that school and its community and enjoyed it right to the very end without getting bored in their last year which is a real accolade to the teaching staff. Parents might comment that it comes at the price of substantial fees though ( for a prep school ).

In case it confused anybody, I meant a total of 100 boys in the year 7/8 boy boarding houses ( 50ish per house)

To be perfectly honest, and assuming your child is a boy, I’d just ignore Dragon School altogether and travel just a little bit further north (1 mile) up the Banbury Road for Summer Fields.

If the OP has a boy and is considering boarding (several ifs) then certainly visiting both Summer Fields and Dragon would be worthwhile as the two schools offer a different style of education, Summer Fields is traditional boys prep with the aim to prepare boys well for traditional boarding public schools. The Dragon school has a longstanding ethos of fostering independent questioning minds in their pupils and encouraging them to express their ideas. As a large co ed school it has the experience of preparing children for a plethora of different day and boarding schools, for example the brightest may end up choosing schools in or out of Oxford depending on what best suits them and their families
