this crowd

Anyone heard of them? Or heard them being given to Y11s to determine their future career direction/A level choices etc?

I certainly hadn't til alerted to them by someone I know whose DS is at a Private-of-course.

My lot did them. Just treated them as a bit of a lol. Some were accurate, others weren't. No one used them as a guide if they had other subjects they'd rather do!

Aha - we did these at my bog-standard comp. years ago.

Not by this particular group, but a similar thing.

Much hilarity when some girls were apparently destined for some very unlikely careers.

Yes, I recall being 'assessed' back in 1980 at my girls' GS- and them coming up with 'Merchant Navy communications officer", and "Air traffic controller".

I'm not either! I was fairly rubbish at physics and maths (though scraped the 'O' levels), for a start!

My children did them, with very unlikely results. Just a money-spinner IMO - I wonder, does the school make anything out of it? Can't think of any other reason why they're still going

Erebus · 17/09/2013 13:33

I imagine the school thinks this constitutes 'carers advice' Grin. Personally, I can't see asking a typically gormless 15 year old a load of questions can really, in most cases, define much about a DC's future career- unless they're one of those few, committed types who know at 11 what they want to be! Direction, maybe, but it's my belief that many of the jobs our DC will be doing during the course of their working lives may not even exist yet!

I think careful guidance in GCSE or A level choices is way more useful, avoiding closing possible doors if a DC hasn't glanced behind them, yet. You still hear about DC who find they can't access a uni course because they were poorly advised about an A level choice.

DD brought a leaflet home about this today.

I think it carries a charge of about £250 (give or take, I can't remember). Friend's DD did it last year, and was very positive about it. Said it helped her daughter finalise what she wanted to do for A Level, and gave her career options that she hadn't previously considered.

Lilymaid · 19/09/2013 22:02

DS did one in Y10. He thought it a waste of time and money. He didn't follow any of the advice and 10 years on is successfully pursuing a career that wasn't on his list of suggestions. It may be helpful for some but most of his peer group got exactly the same suggestions and like DS have not pursued those careers (from memory they were recommended to go into law, journalism and language based careers whereas they mainly have gone into science, medicine engineering and economics.

DD1 did one and, unbelievably, now wants to pursue one of the careers it suggested after she has finished at University. It can give you pointers to strengths and weaknesses but it can produce hilarious results. The loudest girl's suggested career was a librarian! Didn't bother to have it done for DD2. She, and we, knew what her strengths and weaknesses were without being told and likely careers for her. If you have to pay for it, I am not sure I would bother because it probably cannot tell you anything you do not already know. Ours came up with the same as Lilymaid, except we had barrister and editor!
