Would anyone care to cast any eye over ds's end of year 7 report?

here

I am going to talk to the school this afternoon, but I just wanted somebody else to have a looks nd tell me if I'm missing something. I can't work out when he is supposed to have met those targets by- if it's the end of year 7, then he's only met 3, which is not good- but if the end of year 9 ( the reference to end of KS3 seems to suggest that) then the targets are a bit silly, surely?
He got 4 prizes at the end of last year, so he's doing well. But I hate not understanding! Any thoughts?

Those targets do look very low. DD (just started yr8) school set targets for yr 9 at beginning of yr7. Her maths target is 7a, she achieved 7c end of yr7. English target 6a (6b attained) French & Spanish both 6a (now 5c). Can't remember the rest but they were all very similar.

surely they must be end of yr7 targets. Seems crazy if they're not.

BTW, I cannot profess to understand these reports as DD1 is our first to go to secondary but I thought my DDs targets were set too low. Have no idea how these targets are set but would love to know how they predict where they will be with so many variables Smile

Hm - 'targets' given in KS3 are usually for the end of yr9, those definitely look low compared to current attainment. Note that levels for subjects they only start in secondary such as MFL and tech usually are low in yr7 and often stay lower relative to other subjects through ks3.

But he has exceeded his targets by one level in the core subjects, and is doing ok in the other targets, none of which he has previous experience in.

fine for year seven.

MadameDefarge · 12/09/2013 13:38

I think you are over thinking this. He is doing well!

The only question would be year 7 targets or KS3 targets. It seems obvious to me these are his year 7 targets.

My first thought when looking at the targets is they look lazily worked out. They're all 5a or 4a. That makes me suspicious that they are a general target rather than an individual worked out one.
hat means that some might be a bit low (eg maths) some might be high (eg PE)
They may have also had to assess the new subjects (technology/PE etc) after only a very few lessons at the beginning of the year too.

I would say they are year 7 targets, but I don't think there's anything to worrry about as he's over achieved in the core subjects.

Thank you. They were end of Year 7 targets- but the student side of the website said they were end of KS3, because the school used to set KS3 targets in year 7, but changed the system without updating the website. Hence my confusion. They were generically produced based on 3 levels of progress in KS3. Apparently, the idea is to produce more personalised ones this term.

I'm not concerned about his progress,( although he is deeply pissed off at the PE mark!) but I am concerned about the way the information is presented (I am a governor of the school). I am also concerned about making sure kids get achievable, but aspirational targets.
