Is it just me, or is this strange?

This afternoon at ds's infant school there is an exhibition of children's work to which the parents are invited. The work has been mounted and framed by a local company, who are doing the exhibition and who will pack it away afterwards. We (the parents) will be able to buy our children's work and the company will return some of the profits from the exhibition to the school.

Does this sound strange?

I think it sounds like a lovely idea - as long as they're not charging an arm and a leg for the framed pictures.

NomDePlume · 19/06/2006 13:30

In a word, yes. I'd expect to pay for the framing, but not to pay for the painting my child made.

foxinsocks · 19/06/2006 13:30

I think it's a bit much for infants.

Dior · 19/06/2006 13:31

I would ask for the picture without the frame!

JackieNo · 19/06/2006 13:31

They did this at a friend's DD's school - I'm not sure. Like WWB says, it depends how much they're going to charge. And couldn't the school do it themselves and keep all the profits?

southeastastra · 19/06/2006 13:31

some of the profits! sounds a little annoying!

Caligula · 19/06/2006 13:32

Strange.

Agree with NdP. This company will be PR-ing this and getting good local publicity, so I hope they are not making a profit from it. (Would object to my child's work being used for profit tbh, except by me!)

PrettyCandles · 19/06/2006 13:42

Good. I'm not unreasonably fussy about this then. I have no objection to fundraising, and will support the school in any way I can, but I don't see why I should pay to have someone else's choice of ds's work framed. And in their choice of frame too. Let alone why I should pay to take my child's work home. I wonder what will become of the unpurchased items? Do they become the property of the company? I would certainly object to that!

DDs school do similar with Xmas cards. The kids do a picture, they send a proof home saying your childs pic can be made into cards at 3.50 a shot for 10 cards please make a cheque payable to....
I wait till they send the original home and knock out the cards on the pc.

Whizzz · 19/06/2006 13:43

Nice idea but I bet we are all buried under loads of artwork done by our kids. To be honest, I would sooner buy a frame myself & frame any worth keeping. The fact that 'some' of the profits are going to the school sounds like its a nice little earner for the framing company.

peasinapod · 19/06/2006 13:51

I think I paid 8 pounds when they did this at my DS school

pashmina · 19/06/2006 14:20

my kids school do it in connection with an art show - the school is turned in to an art gallery - with local artits work on display too. They pay a commision to the school for anything sold. The PTA frame a picture from every child and parents are invted to purchase. No profit goes to any company, and all the work framong the pictures is carried out by commitee members. This is a BIG earner for the school - I would resent paying a company to do it and take some of the profit

PrettyCandles · 19/06/2006 14:26

Now that's something I would support wholeheartedly, Pashmina.

we raise about £5k profit a year from this - and the school has less than 200 kids!

Beetroot · 19/06/2006 14:50

we did that for eyesavers.

10 quid for picture

3.50 to eyesavers.

i refused to buy saying I would give my 10 quid straight to dyesaver. Dh didn't realise I ad said this and went and bought them!!!

Beetroot · 19/06/2006 14:51

much better pashimina

PrettyCandles · 19/06/2006 16:09

Just came back. They were charging £6 per picture, of which £1.50 went to the school. I told the Head my opinion of this, and didn't buy.

southeastastra · 19/06/2006 17:48

what did the head say?? that is terrible

Beetroot · 19/06/2006 23:29

1.50 to the school what a racket!

PrettyCandles · 20/06/2006 11:20

The head said that this was the first time they're trying it, it's quite common in other schools and they'll see what the response is like. I talked to one or two other mums and they also feel a bit uncomfotable about it, but they made the point that it hadn't been well publicised (true, I only recall one mention of an exhibition of children's work, with no details - certainly not about paying etc) and that while the children had been well primed about it, the parents had not, and so had great difficulty refusing to buy their children's work.

There are about 150 children in the school so the maximum raised could only be £225, less of course if not all parents cough up. Not at all worthwhile IMO.
