Hi DH and I have decided to move to Devon/Cornwall borders area. Ds is just finishing year 4 and we need to sort work. So the plan is to move so that ds stays at present school for year 5&6 and we move in school hols and he starts year 7 in new area. We recognise this may not work this neatly but think it is what we should aim for.

Does anyone have any advice, recommedations for schools, places to live etc. also given have to apply in oct 2014 -would we be better moving a bit earlier?

Be aware that many of the secondaries in that area have limited or no post-GCSE education and pupils have to travel vast distances to access this. Ensure that you are near a sixth-form type college when considering location.

Plympton and plymstock just outside of Plymouth have good schools.
Particularly Heles School in Plympton and Coombe Dean in Plymstock.

And they are very nice places to live Smile

Take a good look at Ivybridge Community College. I have heard some very positive things about it and Ivybridge and around about is a good area to live in with Plymouth in easy reach

proposed free school

Ivybridge Community College has a very good reputation. I live in Ivybridge and can add it's a lovely town to live in, close to Plymouth (and not too far from Exeter).
If you're more keen on Plymouth though, there are a few less desirable schools but good ones are Hele's School (Plympton), Coombe Dean (just outside Plymstock) and of course the grammar school - Devonport High for Boys.
If you don't already live in the area when you apply, you might be at a disadvantage as you do have to give your current permanent address and for some schools, living close puts you at an advantage. Ivybridge isn't usually oversubscribed as it's huge with a wide catchment, but the good Plymouth schools usually are. That said, I'm sure you're not the first person in this predicament so might be worth a quick call to the School Admissions team in Plymouth City Council?

Sorry not to add anything constructive! I just had to share... Am interested in the replies you're getting, although my DC are only very little.

Judy I think I'd like to go to that school. At least I'd be sure of getting a laugh even if I didn't learn much!! Honestly that website is incredible. They've not even checked it through - how about this for a quote:

Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their teachers to cross,

Surely they mean their pupils to cross???

What on earth is a "healing modality session". I have no idea but if I went there I'd find out as I'd be put through 2 sessions a week!!

I could go on. Suffice to say thank you for the link its very amusing. I'll be amazed if they get the funding especially if that's how they've worded their application!

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 10/07/2013 11:23

God, I hope they don't! P

Inclusionist · 10/07/2013 15:52

Oh my, that school is going to be EATEN ALIVE by ofsted!!

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 10/07/2013 16:54

It's okay, they'll wave crystals and they'll go away. Surely?

MrButtercat · 10/07/2013 17:39

If they get time for Ofsted after their daily parent/ teacher meetings and oneness sessions.

The funniest thing I've seen in.a.long.time! Even funnier is that down here I bet it would be popular,I know several Totnessy types who would queue up to get their kids in.Grin

Inclusionist · 10/07/2013 18:36

Judy Grin I might try that

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 10/07/2013 18:39

Oh it would be popular! That's what's so scary about it...
