Need a Tutor for 13+ and Motivation

Hello everyone .

I'm a MN novice. I come in search of advice. My oldest DD is at a local state school but me and DH want to move her to a private secondary school... Her form teacher says she's doing well but she gets no one on one attention..... Honestly, I don't feel her Maths or English have improved much over the last 12 months Confused Im sometimes baffled by what she doesn't know. I don't know what she's like compared to other girls of the same age. she's always reluctant to do homework in the evenings now and I'm tired of the screaming and grumpy moods that come when I get her to sit down and do it. I tremble at the memory of her half term Rainforest project

She used to love doing her homework......... A couple of years ago lost all focus... I have twin DS's and I'm scared that DDs problems started when they arrived... DH says I'm being silly and that it's all 'normal' but I'm worried ....

I want an inspiring tutor to help her fall in love with her work again. Does anyone have any recommendations? I wouldn't know where to start with finding a tutor. I have a clear image in my head of my perfect tutor but couldn't think how to find them.

Thank you in advance for any advice

What age is she, will she really need to sit common entrance at 13+ - most senior schools who take at 13 have special exams just in core subjects for children that have not been at prep schools doing common entrance.

I would decide on the senior school you are interested in and then seek a tutor. As trinity says if she is at state school she won't be expected to do CE and the school will set an exam geared to the work she has done in state school.

OP as already said first find a suitable independent senior school one that you both like and feel comfortable with, find out what there admissions criteria is, all will vary to some degree and if they have a place for you daughters yr of entry which I assuming is next yr or beyond, the super selectives wont they usually pre test in yr 6 neither will lots of slightly less selective London day schools. Then find out about any entrance exams you DD will be required to sit. Most schools have an "admissions" section on their website detailing all these things but a conversation with the person in charge of admissions is often the best thing.

Independent senior schools for girls often start at yr 7 so you might be able to get a place outside of the usual admissions point its worth asking.

Meant to add if you both find a school she really likes then this might improve her motivation; she might be more willing to work for the entrance exams.
Where do you live?

A private secondary school is likely to have its own exam for admission. As others have said, it would be better to identify the school you are interested in and then seek a tutor to help with the particular exam.

Is your DD already at secondary school? Are you just looking for her to go in at year 9? A private school can take children at other times in the year, if they have places.
