Yes- there was a huge thread on this.
It won't work - teachers can't cope without these days.( When I started teaching we didn't need them- the job has changed)

ReluctantBeing · 03/07/2013 19:17

Most of the ones I work with are not much cop, so I wouldn't be too bothered.

The ones that I have worked with are brilliant. Many were teachers who don't want the workload, many have degrees and just want a job to fit in with children. My first question as a supply teacher is 'do I have a TA'. In some schools with DCs with statements I have had more than one.

exoticfruits · 03/07/2013 19:46

My dyslexic DS would never have got where he is today without having so much time with brilliant TAs.

Elibean · 03/07/2013 19:46

Our TAs are absolutely vital. They go on training courses, cascade their specialist skills to others (including some teachers), form the backbone of the school in many ways. They have meetings to share skills, support the class teachers, and take small groups as needed.

They are held in high esteem by everyone from parents to teachers, through Governors and, obviously, the kids they look after.

If Michael Gove could see the reality at work in our school, he would eat his words again

I run specialist unit with a team of highly motivated, highly qualified, totally dedicated and hugely underpaid TAs/ HLTAs. Where the DM got the figure of £17k from is beyond me- that is a salary not much less than an NQT.

Yes there are some TAs around who are not much cop but these are largely in the minority. How on earth my ten SN pupils with a variety of complex needs would cope in mainstream without TA support is beyond me.
