Interim Head, Primary School - for how long?

DD's school has an interim head that was appointed a couple of weeks ago. All we were told is that she has been appointed due to the continued absence of the HT. No one seems to know why the HT is absent.

How long an absence could be expected before it is decided to appoint a new permanent head? The interim HT is causing waves both amongst the staff and the parents and many are very unhappy. This is soon going to filter through to the children and will have an effect on them.

A head is an employee and has employment rights just like any other employee. Presumably the absence is due to allowable reasons and within the terms of their employment contract and so whatever that contract allows is the time that they can take. For example a pregnant head would be allowed maternity leave just like any other employee so could be off for a year.

well daughters old primary head was sick but actually put gardening leave before xmas then in jan everyone found out wouldent be back.

only just appointed head a month ago who starts in september.

I would say no longer than one academic year depending on how bad schools doing as if badly school gets extra support.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if there are any special procedures in order to keep the school running happily. At the moment the situation is quite difficult as no one seems to know what is going on.

The head of off sick for a while then re-appeared for a couple of weeks. Now he is gone again but we don't know for what reason. As expected, rumours abound. Hopefully, the issues will be resolved before the start of the autumn term.
