Can anyone help with a MATHS type question, Stastics??

I thought it was simple until I saw what some one else has done and now I don't understand it. If anyone can help I will post the problem but I will have to get my calculator.

Off course I meant statistics. Any maths types out there?

OK here goes. It's actually to do with my work and ot has been driving me crazy. Imagine this:

Month No.sick days No of pupils Ave per pupil
Jan 10 100 .01
Feb 9 101 .089
Mar 5 98 .057

If i want to work out the average sick day per pupil for the 3 mths I simply added the no of sick days up for 3 mths =24
then devided it by the total for no of pupils =299
answer being 0.80. Alternatively I would have added the right hand column up and devided by 3.

Do you think this is correct. If you do I will show you what someone else did.

I had a lovely table which didn't translate to well when I posted I will try again.

Sorry about table. Yes essentally the same pupils.

How another person did it was to add all the pupils up and devide by 3 to get the average no of pupils 99.6 and then using the actual sick for 3 mths of 24. So 99.6 devided by 24 =4.15.

Are you sure March isn't 0.051?
Also, unlessI'm doing something wrong, adding the right hand column and dividing by 3 gives a different answer (0.052, or0.05, depending on March figure)

So

In January 100 pupils had 10 days off = 0.1 days per child
In February 101 pupils had 9 days off = .089 days per child
In March 98 pupils had 5 days off = 0.05 days per child

Across 3 months there are ave 99.7 pupils having average 8 days off = 0.08 per child (8%)

Depends how you do it.
1)Days = 10 + 9 + 5 = 24
pupils = 100 + 98 +101 = 299
24 / 299 = 0.08 = 8%

2)10 / 100 = 0.10
9/101 = 0.09
5/98 = 0.06

0.10 + 0.09 +.06 =.25 / 3 = 0.09 = 9%

There are many different ways of doing this calculation.
Once you choose one way, stick to it.
If the previous person did it by means of one calculation....use the same.
