I've no idea what to give dd to take in tomorrow, I've never done this show and tell thing before, and she's been given the theme of growing(!)They only told me last friday so I've not had time to grow anything and I'm still clueless. Help!

plant some seeds in a small pot {before}
buy some tomatoes on-the-vine (after)
she can explain how the seed will grow into the tomatoes.
maybe she could even plant the seeds in the classroom.

or any other plant that is readily available.

what age is she?

make a cress head with a potato and cress seeds and leave it at school for them all to watch growing

raggedyanna · 08/05/2006 08:07

What about the good old carrot top in water idea?

Twiglett · 08/05/2006 08:07

as an alternative could send her in with pictures of herself as a baby / toddler and now .. show how she's growing and changing Grin

our school doesn't do show and tell .. seems v. american to me Grin

was going to suggest similar to Twig...scan picture!

I had thought about babies, but I'm not sure if that is the sort of thing they are looking for. Might raise some interesting questions too, talking about babies growing! Grin

dd is 5, I think I might go with some sort of seed idea. The only reason why I hadn't was because there is no time to actually grow anything. Taking it in for the school sounds good though. Smile If I did the potato head, so I jsut stick the seeds on top of it? Also tempted by the tomatoes.

I've never come across show & tell before. ds is only 3 and does it too, but it's optional every week, and they just take soemthing for the table.

scoop a bit out of the top of the potato to put wet cotton wool in, then carve a face into the potato so when then seeds grow it looks like hair on a head.

i like the photo idea :)

Babies are fine - they've done "growing up" in DS2s reception class recently.

I had to take BabyDragon in when they were learning about eggs and hatching!! "How did she come out of your tummy...?" was the worst I had to deal with (no "how did she get in there?" questions :))

or photos/book of animals and their young - eg a horse & foal, cow & calf etc. (teach her the correct term for a baby rabbit is a kitten - this always amazed the children in my class!) I included all areas of growing when I covered this topic with reception each year - plants, humans, animals, even including it in maths & constuction games (eg can you make this tower bigger/smaller). hth!

supakids · 08/05/2006 12:45

how quick can cress grow - overnight?!

neena28 · 08/05/2006 12:47

Maybe if you plant some now a little will be breaking out of the seed. Can you get a little punnet of cress from the supermarket and do tiny, small, big with it. Lots of damp cotton wool, we often do cress at home as it is so quick to grow even I can't kill it in a couple of hours!

fisil · 08/05/2006 12:57

have you got her first pair of shoes? A very graphic image of how she has grown.

Gloworm · 09/05/2006 18:44

which one did you do? wasn't it today?

Kelly1978 · 10/05/2006 08:37

We went to the garden center and got a tomato plant, and got the toms on a vine too. dd was very excited by the idea of growign toms and I think it went well, though by the time I got the plant home again half the leaves were missing. Grin

I didn't see the message about the shoes until after I got back, I was only lookign at them at the weekend, and I didn't think of that. duh!
