Eton Test - advice, please?

Hello!

I posted about my DS's Eton application a while back, and had some very kind and helpful responses. Entirely as a result of one particularly helpful response, we are applying via the 'normal' entry route even though he can only go if he ends up with a music scholarship (which would normally mean he wouldn't apply until Y8).

He has now been invited for the Eton Test and interview in April. I have a fairly good idea what the interview will involve, as the Admissions Tutor spoke about this at some length when we visited the school. However, the Eton Test is still something of a mystery. I'm assuming it's similar to the NFER verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests that they do as DS's prep school, but this is nothing more than an assumption and I would be very happy to be put right on this score. Could anyone please tell me what DS might be expecting? His current school has a very good record for obtaining scholarships (of all types) to public schools, has but relatively little experience of Eton.

Well, good luck and best wishes for the Eton Test and interview next month. I wouldn?t worry too much at this stage about anything and deal with matters one at a time when they turn up.

The computer test sounds frightening to most parents but really I?ve never heard of anyone ?failing? this test to date. In fact, I remember distinctly during my DS?s time, Eton didn?t want to create too much fuss about the computer test only saying, ?if he can point a mouse on a computer and click, then he?ll be alright? or words to that effect. My advice is to concentrate and think clearly what is required and then act accordingly without wasting time and move on to the next question.

I understand he?s hoping for a music scholarship in order to have a realistic chance to attend Eton. If he is successful then Eton can top up the scholarship with a bursary even up to 100 percent, so again, not to worry about that at this stage.

Perhaps this video held recently will inspire him even further to get that music scholarship. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this very professional performance as with everything else produced by Eton - naturally!

Good luck for the test. Don't fret over it - remember its predictive and doesn't tell Eton College (or you) a current IQ score or anything like that. The questions are more like puzzles. Some good practice might be doing puzzle books, NVR, and online brain training games. There's very little else one can do, boys cannot revise for it.
