Really incompetent school secretary?

I've been baffled for months now as to why none of the teachers seem to be unaware of why my children are absent from school when they're sick, and why they haven't been receiving school trip forms, etc. - I've traced it down to the school secretary!

She works on the desk in the reception and every time I go in she never acknowledges my presence, I have to wait until she's finished her gossiping/personal phone call/browsing the Web before she deigns to look up at me, and then I have to make all the conversation. She is really unpleasant in her manner - it's really got to the stage when I'd rather not go in at all if I can help it because I'm made to feel so unwelcome, with lots of sighing and tutting, no smiles etc. That's when she is in - she seems to be taking every Monday off plus lots of other sick days, so there's no-one to speak to on those days, no news put up on the website etc. etc. Yesterday we had a snow day but when I tried calling the school from 8am there was no answer so I just had to take my chances and bring the kids in.

I thought it was just me having the problem but I've spoken to other parents and they agree she's just so unhelpful. I don't know if to approach the Head, because it means speaking to the receptionist again and telling her what it's about! Any thoughts?

You don't need to tell her why you would like to speak to the Head. Just say it's confidential.

If quite a few of you feel the School Secretary isn't doing her job effectively, a tactful suggestion that perhaps she needs a bit of training might be a good opening gambit?
