I'm really concerned about the quality of the lunches at DD's school and have made an apt with the acting mistress in charge about them tomorrow morning. So please would you help me out by telling me

a) what your schools charge and

b) what are the lunches like, are you happy with them.

Lot's of mum's seem to be moving towards packed lunches because of concerns about the food served at the school but I think it's really important for lo's to have hot food at lunch time and have decided to be brave and raise the subject with the school.

To kick off we pay £190 a term for hot lunch, £50 for lunchtime supervision only.

On the face of it the menu looks OK but I'm suspicious that there is a lack of fresh fruit and veg and I heard a rumour concerning Mr Kipling cakes this morning. They say that there is always fresh fruit as an alternative pudding but DD1 tells me this is just an orange or an apple, regardless of the season.

I think the letter looks just fine passionflower. There are a couple of typos...can point them out if wished.
Good luck with this - I think you have good cause for concern.

Sorry Passionflower, think your letter is good.

Have you sent it to the school yet?

My DD is in the nursery of a prep school and her home cooked good quality meals with puddings cost £1 a day. When she moves to the juniour school her food in included in the fees.
If you're not happy, you have every right to complain. If no one ever complained then nothing would ever change for the better. Good Luck.

We have good lunches at school - lots of choice, and plenty of fresh fruit.

At my sons' old prep school, the lunches were wholesome, if a bit boring. Usually, fresh fruit or yoghurt was the pudding.

That is why mine hav packed lunches - simply not possible to have quality ingredients at that price!!! Why not give them a good quality packed lunch and then a hot meal in the evening? That way you know that they are getting a good nutritional balance.
Mine have a sandwich on good bread (ege dseeded wholemeal granary with protein fand and salad filling eg cheese, ham, tuna; fruit smoothie;dried fruit - eg mango, apricots; unsweetened yughurt and strawberries, raspberries, orange slices, grapes etc in a plastic reusable container.
Occasionally they complain that other children have crisps, but they know that in our house crisps are only for when we all watch a movie together....
