hi everyone,
i have a question for you.
i was told by somebody that in reception there are 45 words that they have to know by the end of the school year. im a bit worried because were almost halfway through & dd only knew about 11 of them last wednesday when i found out they had to know 45, i spent the weekend teaching her some more & she now easily knows another 5 or 6. shes a very bright child & i worry that she is being held back by her teacher so all the class are at the same level.
does anybody know if it is right that they need to know them by the end of reception?
thanks in advance.

Hiya Popsy! Don't go to any trouble. I am just constantly intrigued and amazed by the completely different education experience my two dss have had, just two years, but 250 miles apart, but in the same country. The 'reception year' they have each had could not be more different: one highly regimented and big emphasis on formal literacy and numeracy skills, the other VERY informal and relaxed, with extremely little/no formal instruction of any kind!

I actually don't have any major concerns about either approach - both seem equally valid. But you certainly can't do both, you either follow one educational philosophy or the other!

PS Thank you so much for the link to the literacy standards site on the other thread. What a fascinating site! And it is great to live in a country where such material is freely available top anyone who wants to read it. (Am I a very sad case?!)

Not sad at all kmg!!
You are entitled to know where all of the philosophy and 'instructions to teachers' comes from!!!
Some of it is very good..and some.....

Well would you believe it. I asked ds yesterday evening if his class had been learning any words...and guess what. They had. He now had a word book with I and like in it. How bizarre is that!

Hi Beccles - nice to have a lurker posting - welcome! Great to have another teacher on here too - personally I really value your input.

I didn't know the NLS wasn't compulsory - that's interesting. Probably explains our experience in two different counties.

Soupdragon (or anyone with more sense than me),

How do you print off the words without printing all the gobblydegook at the end of the document?

Thanks

Carla - this page is from Popsy's link on another thread (ELS). If you go down to the bottom: ELS Appendix, then print p.10 of the PDF file. I think these are the same words ... Maybe not all of them. HTH.
