Has anyone any updates on how the boys got on at Reeds?

Thanks Legal - it has been crap that's true! After 4/5 rejections it's hard to stay positive for the last one at the end of the week. Something will work out I know - it's just so hard thinking of how not to crush a spirited boy's confidence..... :(

Also sorry to hear that Papalazaru and I too hope everything works out for the best. We're waiting on a reeds letter and I don't want to get my hopes up, feeling very nervous now...

We got in :)

Papalazaru sorry to hear your news. Did you get on the waiting list? As we have got in at another school and didn't get a scholarship for this one, we will not be taking up the place so that is one on the waiting list happy! If you got on the list ring the school and see what number you are.

Racingheart how did the S interview go? Do you get the result immediately as the YES?NO letters are out?

Hi papa,

Really sorry to hear that. Aren't you applying from overseas? It must be so difficult. Have you heard from Claremont yet?

Have you tried the American School at Cobham? they may be more up to speed with international teaching. Your DS can't help not having covered the UK syllabus.

Thanks for all your sympathies.... Still to hear from Claremont but I'm not so hopeful any more.
We really want him to go to a local school rather than ACS as there is always a huge turnover at international schools. None of the rejections have indicated we're on a waiting list so I'm not sure about places coming available. 2/4 said his literacy was above average but that his maths let him down which is what I expected given that he's been in the gifted programmed here. 1 was the other way round which seemed very odd to me. I'm waiting for feedback from Reeds - hopefully that can shine some light on where the problems are...... Seems to me that maths is the easiet fix.
Anyway - well done to those with places and scholarships and good luck to all still waiting.

My DS unfortunately did not get good news on Reeds. I was curious how feedback has been from those that have asked (and which person did you ask?) Reeds and my DS's prep school probably both would rather DS apply for 13+ but we thought a change at 11+ was better. DS thought he did well on the test, hence I'm trying to find out if it was test scores or maturity/age that let him down. Congratulations to all that did get good news!

JohnnyT, I'm so sorry to hear that. But if he's at a prep, that's not quite so harsh as if he were at state school with nowhere to go onto. Can he stay at his prep and try again at 13+?

Hi Fayerfield - thanks for asking. His scholarship interview seemed to go well. He was asked the square root of some massive number and worked it out in his head which went down well. Then was given a puzzle which he completely didn't get. Hmm

He was hugely impressed by the headmaster's study and by being interviewed by the Head himself. His hands were shaking before he went in. But the Head told him that because of being invited to scholarship he was automatically being offered a place at the school, regardless of scholarship outcome, so he came out beaming.

Reeds is lovely. They seem always to behave exactly the way you'd want a school to behave.

Thanks racingheart. DS can stay at his school and try again although most schools are moving to pretests in Yr 6-7 so we're trying to find out where he fell short. Undoubtedly it would have been his English. Fingers crossed for other schools and everyone else on MN.

JohnnyT - sorry to hear you didn't get good news too - I know how it feels :(
I asked for feedback from all the registrars at the schools and they were all very helpful so it's worth trying to find out. They won't give out scores but will tell you what areas were weak or strong.
Well done to your DS racingheart - not sure I could work out the square root of a big number in my head!

The crazy thing is though that I'm not sure that being told which is the weaker area really helps that much - I think you need to know how weak it was comparatively.

I only say that as we were lucky enough to get an offer (and I do think a lot of luck is involved) but our results letter says that DS had weakness in his English paper and that will need work over the next few months. DS has just been levelled at school as 5a/6c writing and 5b/5a reading. He could of course have had a bad day on the day of the test, but just telling me he had a weakness in English tells me absolutely nothing helpful really. Was it weak compared to his maths or weak compared to the level of English they expect and if the latter is the case, I would love to know what they expect Shock

Yes legalL you do need to know where it was relative to their benchmark and hence the cohort of students he'll be joining with. Otherwise how do you know what level you need to get him to.....? It's worth calling them to get more info I think. That being said - well done to your DS. There were 200 boys taking the tests so he's done very well :)
