We have a year 11 boy who is thinking of going here to board...
We have to make a decision quite soon and are not able to visit the school until a week or so before we pay the deposit ...eek

We live a way away and therefore have no friends with insider knowledge - we'd love any information - good or bad....

Long time MNer just name changed

thanks

I think he can be quite competitive - academically ...

Slightly worried about the sport as he's not very - despite 'looking' the part!

I think the sport is more important earlier in the school. By sixth form there are other skills you can have which are admired. Earlier in the school it's them who like rugby, and them that don't iyswim. I imagine sixth formers are past that.

If you're worried about him being out on the town, just tell him you've got a couple of Mumsnetters spying on him and reporting back Xmas Grin.

iclaudius · 11/12/2012 21:36

iccle i'll hold you to that if he goes!!!! ;)

I'll pay you!

No idea how I ended up here but I'm a student in the LRGS sixth form, so if you have any questions fire away.

Juja · 13/02/2013 21:28

Iclaudius Did you decide for or against Lancaster? - my DS is going as a boarder this Sept and is very excited - he is bright but not sporty - it seems a big enough school to all and the new headmaster is excellent. The matrons in the junior house are lovely

gemmataylor13 · 24/06/2013 15:22

The school is a fantastic school. Our boy excelled there but we did have problems with one of the cleaners being inappropriate with him. As far as I am aware she is still there

taffy123 · 03/07/2013 10:56

Have 2 sons there and would not recommend it to anyone. Its covered up bullying for 18 months and just sweep it under the carpet. I have 2 other parents that I know who also have had their sons in a terrible emotional state due to bullying. I am really shocked at the boys morals and how they get away with their attitudes and I am trying to get a anti bullying group set up. Academically my boys thrive but socially it is unacceptable the morals of the school are very low. Just my opinion of course and a few others as the boys have a pack mentality and are never made accountable for their actions by the teachers. I would move my sons but they continue to stay and put up with it for the academic rewards only. Feel free to contact me for any more information.

Chester66 · 05/12/2013 01:15

Taffy would really like to hear more about anti bullying group. I have a son at LRGS experiencing problems.

Albehk · 16/05/2014 00:38

Any more about bullying in LRGS? My son will be a Year 9 boarder in this school. I'm so worry as we're from overseas ...

iris1234 · 12/05/2015 01:36

Any update in Lancaster Royal Grammar? Overall boarding life, support from school, is it ok?

iris1234 · 12/05/2015 01:40

iclaudius, any comment from you after entering the school?

Lancsmumof2 · 16/05/2015 13:43

I have friends with boys in years 7, 8, 11 and sixth form and they all recommend the school. I don't think it has any more of a bullying problem than any other school. (Perhaps just more touchy parents!). It is highly thought of in the area and does well on The Times list etc. My year 5 son will certainly be sitting the exam in September even though we are out of area. I believe the new head is doing good things too.

mumisconcerned · 05/06/2015 13:25

Hi everyone
My son is starting lrgs as a day pupil this September and we are out of area.Is there any updates about lrgs :I mean is there still bullying issues and how is it overall?

paddyclampitt · 02/10/2015 23:05

My DS has just started there as a day pupil and he is very happy there! It is very sporty which is good for DS but no issues with bullying as yet !

kjwh · 03/10/2015 19:27

My son has just started his third year at LRGS and couldn't be happier.

He's not really into sport and was worried about the emphasis they put on Rugby etc., but after the first couple of games lessons, he was put into a lower group where there was no pressure. Now in year 9, he's opted out of Rugby and had a choice of Hockey, Table Tennis and Cross Country, so he doesn't need to play rugby anymore.

He's never once complained of bullying which is what we were most worried about as he's a "sensitive" boy. Never once got up in the morning and not wanted to go. He seems to have a wide circle of friends both in his own form (they're not split up yet so stay together for all but a couple of lessons), and also from other forms mainly from the bus journey in and the games lessons.

The "sporty" boys do seem to stay apart from the "dorky" boys but from what we can gather, there's no problems between each group.

The worst that my lad has complained about is that some of the older boys (meaning years 10 and 11 mostly) are a bit rough, i.e. pushing past in the corridors and through doors etc., which sounds more like they're throwing their weight around rather than bullying.

WingDefence · 17/01/2020 15:32

Hi @Donottroubleme, my DS is due to start boarding next September in year 7 and he is so keen, he'd go tomorrow if he could. It got an outstanding Ofsted boarding report in October which you might want to see.

Have you looked round the school? Before applying last year we visited three separate times (two of those were the summer open days and one normal school day) and each time made sure we visiting the boarding house.

I'd say start with by visiting with your DS and particularly check out the boarding house.

Donottroubleme · 17/01/2020 23:42

Hi WingDefence. Thanks a lot for your reply sounds quite reassuring.I will definitely want to visit the school and in particular the boarding house.Hope your DS has a wonderful time when he starts school this September.Would really appreciate all information put in by moms who have their boys in the school and are boarders too.It will be helpful for all of us who haven't started yet. Thanks a mil

Mumski45 · 18/01/2020 20:51

Hi @Donottroubleme
I have 2 boys in yr 7 and 9 at LRGS but they are not boarders. you can ask me anything and I will do my best to answer honestly.

Overall I am very happy with the school and both boys are thriving.
There is a culture of hard work and its cool to do well which I like. They are strong on sport particularly Rugby, Cricket, Rowing and athletics amongst others.

I like the way they publicise and celebrate any child who achieves at either sports or other activities whether it is in school or not.

Like any school there is the odd trouble maker and a few pupils who have difficulties but from what I can see these are dealt with appropriately.

I would strongly recommend you visit the school on an open day if you can which is usually in June.

Donottroubleme · 19/01/2020 10:03

Hi Mumski45....
Thanks a bunch for your reply. It is so good to hear about all positives for LRGS......it's honestly these things you are looking for in a good school like LRGS.I am glad to know that academics and sports are equally important, especially for any child who is interested in sports as well. Thanks again....A humble request to all moms please keep updating as it broadens the information. Thanks again
