Annoyed with private tutoring in public libraries

BeingFluffy · 13/10/2012 15:46

Just visited my local library - both adult and junior. They are both rather small and cramped.

In the adult library the section I wanted to look at was completely blocked off as a tutor and her tutees were plonked in front of it. I saw two other tutors with tutees in there as well.

In the junior library it was even worse. Both sets of tables and chairs were in use by a tutor and tutees. We we unable to look at the books we wanted to.

I did mention it to the staff and they said it concerned them but they weren't sure what to do about it, although the council's by-laws do ban commercial activities/businesses from running in the library.

Surely they can find somewhere else - failing all else there are plenty of coffee shops around and probably quieter.

OP posts:

muriel76 that's completely different, and I can't imagine anyone being bothered by that. A library is a council resource - schools are a function of the council.

Ditto larger nont-for-profit groups, as long as they're coordinated so they don't take up the whole place.

If private tutors want space from which to operate, they can rent some.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 31/10/2012 15:08

You have Rommel upstairs in your library? Where do you live, Thread? [shocked]

ThreadWatcher · 31/10/2012 15:09

Rommel rooms

ThreadWatcher · 31/10/2012 15:10

Gah you beat me to it!
Why would autocorrect change ROOMS to Rommel??? Weird!

NewFerry · 31/10/2012 16:28

Out of interest, I googled the cost of hiring a meeting room at our local library, the cost for a profit making business is £27.50 per hour. Assuming an A level tutor is charging £15 per hour for up to 6 tutees, then that will still give a profit of over £60 per hours tuition.

For non-profit making organisations whose activities support Library Service objectives including lifelong learning, there is no cost. So those who have LEA tutors to support the excluded or those unable to attend school regularly, would be able to hire a room for free.

NewFerry · 31/10/2012 16:29

I am guessing you could reasonably argue that this facility would also be available to HE children Smile

OliviaMumsnet · 31/10/2012 17:32

Ahem.
Just posting a library copy of our guidelines
for those who may need them.

I am a tutor. I have once been asked if I would tutor in a cafe as it was convenient for the student. I declined as a) it is likely to be quite distracting and b) I think students need some sort of privacy when learning- some may be very embarrassed if they think "a n random other" can hear their lesson, especially if they are struggling with something. I would feel the same about tutoring in a library.

I use either my own home or the student's

vengey · 01/11/2012 00:22

I am really sorry that the OP has been driven off Mumsnet due to the nasty trolls on this thread, while MN HQ sit by and do nothing.

ThreadWatcher · 01/11/2012 00:33

vengey - first post from you on MN

In what way has the op been driven off mn - nothing to suggest that - perhaps she is just living real life?

Your post however has an air of Hmm about it - what is your usual posting name?

Viviennemary · 01/11/2012 00:38

If the tutors are charging for their services and using the public library as their premises, I can't see how this can possibly be allowed. Complain to your Council Offices. In effect they are running their business free of charge from public premises.

Pretzelsmakemethirsty · 01/11/2012 06:45

VENGEY = Well, ladies, I just received 5 INBOX messages from VENGEY in which she calls me every vile name under the sun for no apparent reason. Either Vengey is a weirdo guy posing as a girl on here, or she is some SICK MOTHER. Either way, I suggest you avoid this creep like the plague.

Pretzel - I don't agree with your pov. but that doesn't mean you deserve to get vile messages in your inbox.
If you report your post to MNHQ they can check the history of Vengey and take any necessary action

SamSmalaidh · 01/11/2012 08:29

I would just ask the tutor/students to move so you can get to the books you want - and if they don't then ask the staff to get the books you want.

If they won't move for the staff, or the staff won't get you the books, then write letters of complaint.

EdgarAllansPo · 01/11/2012 08:35

Back to the subject of the thread (maybe MNHQ would delete the diviating posts if the op asked). I've come across tutoring in libraries too. All the pupils were jogging the computers and messing about and the tutor turned up about once every 20 minutes or so, saying 'very good, carry on'!

It is not acceptable to use libraries like this. I can see how it would be good for libraries to hire out some of their space for some of the time for educational purposes, but it has to be well managed, not getting in the way of library users. Tutors should have to pay for the hire of the space, and the computers (and be thrown out if they are not working, or have not booked and paid!)

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/11/2012 08:37

Eh? OP driven off thread? Barking.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/11/2012 08:39

Edgar is of course completely correct.

EdgarAllansPo · 01/11/2012 08:39

Hogging, not jogging.

Libraries run great story telling times for young children, and craft workshops, all kinds of great community activites, but tutoring isn't a community enterprise, they should have to pay the same or greater % of earnings as other users.

mignonette · 01/11/2012 08:45

pretzel's getting hysterical.

SuePurblybilt · 01/11/2012 08:49

Barking like a whole pack of dawgs. Moreover, completely barking. Further, entirely woof-mad.

The trouble is, with the 'use the libraries' argument is that these tutors may not be adding to the stats of users - if they don't book computers or take out books then there's no record of them being there, surely? And if they're putting people off, I guess they're doing the reverse.

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 01/11/2012 09:10

I have also received 3 vile PM's from Vengey overnight. In which I have been called various names.

mignonette · 01/11/2012 09:13

Oooohhhh can I have a PM Vengey? Don't discriminate now; spread your special kind of love fairly..

You are a pathetic benefit scrounging cow. what a nasty bully you are. You are a disgrace to humanity.

I have not replied to any of these PM's.

Nowhere in my replies on this thread does it say I am on benefits, though the information is available elsewhere. I was not rude to the OP on this thread, I have never seen the name 'vengey' on the boards before, I certainly do not feel that my answers on this thread were in any way bullying, and not even totally disagreeing with the OP, because I said that though I felt the tutor had as much right as the OP to use the library, the tutor was being rude for not moving. So I wasn't even fully against the OP. Yet I am receiving abusive PM's like this on the back of that reply?!
