School Assessments

What do you think about your child having to sit these assessment tests to track their progress? DD (Yr2) has just had a week of tests every single day and I just think it is so tough on them. She didn't do particulary well, but she does actually know most of the answers (as demonstrated in class work) but it appears she panicked or something. She has her SATS coming up soon, I just think she doesn't cope well under pressure.

kid- teacher assessment measn we can use our professional judgement and form a picture of a child's performacne across the year and not just in these wretched SATs. Good teachers will move away from using the sats tests religiuosly but it will take time. Just tell dd that the tests are there to see how well the teachers teach!

Does that mean that even with these assessments, the teacher can take their class work into account when grading them or will her level be worked out on the mark she got?

I seriously don't care what level she gets as a result from these assessments, I'm certain she knows more than these test's showed. It proved she doesn't listen thats for sure!

I was pretty sure my ds was getting assesed this week but he knew nothing about it .

Yes kid the assessment level is formed from the teacher's overall record of a child's achievemnts over the year and so should not solely be about the actual tests.

iN year 2 they have a SATs level given to them and also a teaxcher assesment level I think.

My sons' school also does assessments in preparation for parents' evening, so they can tell you reading ages and spelling ages. I think it's all a bit spurious, since the reading test is only on one comprehension passage and the spelling is based on one list of words, rather than an observation of the child's spelling throughout the year.

The good 9-10 year old readers in Y5 at my sons' school are getting reading ages of 16+, which would make you think they'd all be reading Dickens in their spare time, but of course they're not.

So I can see how it helps to have some idea of progress, but I'm somewhat sceptical of what these numbers really mean.

hello - how do other mums treat school reports of 7 year olds in order to avoid competitiveness between classmates? Is it worth showing them the actual reports or just telling them the overall summary? if they are curious to the point it seems too important to them, then what?

footiemad · 01/04/2006 12:07

I don't totally agree with the SATS test. But think it is important to get an assessment result. (For me anyway)
Me and my Dh want our ds's to do as well as they possibly can at school, by knowing where they need help we can hopefully provide it.
