Class sizes for Reception/ Year 1

Please tell me the class sizes for your Reception/ Year 1 child in state or independent school. I have to choose between 2 independent schools. 1 with a reception class of 25 (though there are 2 teaching assistants) and 1 with a class size of 20. 25 seems like a lot in an independent school but the class may be split into 20 in Year 1 if more children join. What do you think?

Oh, thanks, GDG - I had been wondering if different areas had different maximum sizes, or if schools had any say in the matter.

The school my boys are at wasn't oversubscribed this year in terms of initial applications (though it is some years), but there have been movers to the area and some applicants from other boroughs (we are near the border of our borough).

My older son is in Y3 and there are only 25 in his class, but some KS2 classes have 32 or more.

DS will be in reception class of 16 with teacher and TA, it's an indpendant school. The class size stays the same through the school with 2 classes per year.

Just wondered how much difference the numbers will make. 25 sounds like a lot considering the school is independent. The school has tried to reassure me that because of the TAs only one group of children (the class is split into 5 goups of 5) is without direct staff supervision at any one time and the groups are rotated so this is for a minimal period. The school with 25 in reception is actually just next door to where I work which means I would be able to collect dd at 3.15 every day which wouldn't be possible in the other school with 20 in the reception class and that would mean after school clubs. It's just a question of weighing up the advantages and disadvantages.
