Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone had decided to move their child from State to private to help their summer borns?

I think his age is not necessarily the issue. What is is his confidence and self-esteem.

Go and have a meeting with the teacher, discuss what your DS has told you about wanting more chance to ask questions and ask for help. And ask how you can support him at home to gain confidence in the things he is learning.

I would try that first before resorting to a school move.

I have a mid July boy. He was much slower to get to grips with reading than I though he would be, given his general language and reasoning skills, and he did get anxious about not getting things 'right'. But then he suddenly blossomed found his confidence and finished in Yr 6 with a row of 5s for his SATS.

2b at the end of KS1 for a summer boy is a fine result -and about where Ds was, I think. Maybe a 3 for yakking the hind leg of a donkey using big words. But not for writing, that's for sure.

Sorry - I missed your post about the talks you have had with his teacher.

Thanks everyone, TessDurbeyfield, yes, that's exactly why I want to keep a very close eye on things, I do think he associates with being youngest in class with his ability, as he mentioned last night, he does refer to them being older than him alot, so it's obviously bothering at the moment.

He also mentioned that he doesn't like to put his hand up in case he's got it wrong and he looks stupid, I will be meeting teacher for a 1 2 1 week after next and will pick this up with her.

His reading has really come on and he is nearly at free-reading stage, and his writing, I think, is fine for his age. However the school are expecting him to write a minimum of 1 page in their big write sessions, which immediately puts him off I think as he's thinking how much he has to write to fill a page rather than the content!!

Hi Tess I agree with what you have said and it is interesting that both me and the parents of the other summer-borns did do a lot more with their children than some others because we were aware of the difference. Maybe we continued for much longer than other parents and that could contribute to the reason they did well.

Much (()) it is a worry. Just another positive story here though.

DD1 late july birthday. Now 19. Was in a study about this. THey found no disadvantage , except for those who were prem- ie should have been due Sept/Oct and born July/Aug.

She's always been academically inclined (not sporty at all) being the youngest gave her things to aim for "top of the class" meant beating kids 12 months older pretty much kids DO know where they are even it they aren't told LOL . Drover her on- if she'd been the oldest she'd have no competitors.

Now at a russell group uni doing v well.

Disadvantages yes- driving/drinking./clubbing. But really nothing that matters.
