my oldest child, dd1, is 12 and in first year at secondary school in Scotland (y7 equivalent).
All 3 of my children go to a Gaelic medium school where they are taught mist things through the medium of scottish Gaelic and they are all fluent in the language.
Dd1 is a very keen reader (currently reading The Hobbit) but her spelling is unbelievably poor. Teachers have told us that it's just confusion with the 2 languages, that she needs to express herself and we'll worry about be spelling later etc.
I feel a bit
about this as I'm a basic skills adult educator!
School have tested her and said no, she's not dyslexic, she just can't spell. She doesn't seem to pick up correct spellings from her voracious reading! Her sister who is 12 can spell words better.
I wonder that maybe she's just not a "words" person, she is incredibly artistic, being given different workin class, very musical (plays piano and accordion, sings solo and in the school choir), excels at maths and very good at sports.
But my worry is that children can be labelled by teachers as "thick" if something like spellin is a problem in secondary. I know from my own teaching experience (I was a secondary geog teacher before the kids and still Mark for th SQA and tutor privately) that in exams if your spelling is poor, marks can b deducted.
So I suppose I want to know where to go from here. We'd like an independent dyslexia test for her and we don't know who/where to ask
I'd also appreciate any tips on improving spelling I suppose! I do this sort of thing with adults so have some ideas but. Know children work differently!
