So how involved do you get with helping your child at school work?

First things first, I am a total and utter novice - DS1 starts reception next week. I have no experience or involvement in the education system since I left it 14 years ago.

DS1 had his home visit from the teacher yesterday and she left a sheet for DS1 to write his name and draw a picture in a box and asked him to bring it along on his first day. They give it out to all the reception children and then apparently they all get put onto the wall.

I helped him out a little bit with his surname (i.e. said what letters he needs to write). I left the picture to him totally.

Now I am looking at the picture thinking actually he doesn't draw that recognisably yet, he has drawn a couple of stick men, lots of lines on it (which are apparently traffic cones!) and a few squiggles. Fair enough, but I'm wondering if other mums will have helped / suggested what their kids draw more or even tell them what to draw?

I guess this is the start of it and I am genuinely asking - how much help do you give your children at school work? I am totally expecting the whole letter recognition, practicing reading every night, encouraging opportunities when he gets writing practice and helping out as and when he asks. Or am I being naive? Do most mums / dads push a lot more than this?

This is like being back at school myself!
