Fellow teachers - a straw poll

Good evening fellow teachers. I was just wondering following a discussion that cropped up at work today (INSET) how many of you give your time for no pay and how much time do you give in that capacity (not contracted in any way under directed time etc.). Does your employer expect/ demand it?

How do you tell them when to get off as they are pushing their luck? Or does everyone have reasonable employers? :)

I don't know what hours we are actually contracted to do on a day to day basis. I certainly think 8.30 to 3.30 ( the school day) isn't enough- that's part time hours so certainly I'm happy to do a lot more than that. I think as we are on a salary rather than an hourly rate that we should put in what it takes to do the job within reaon. What's within reason? I guess up to 55 hours a week full-time I'd say.

I was thinking along the lines of time in face to face teaching or similar, not in prep time. How much do you give your employer in extra lesson time ober and obove that you are paid to do? I forgot a lot of teachers spend too long on prep and marking.

Neither would I include any work done at home in my question. Sorry. Needed clarification.
Thanks.

Oh that's very different. I generally expect to be paid for all actual teaching time. I'm part time and this year I am teaching one more period than last for no extra money but I have quite a bit of non contact time so it's Ok. If I were full time I would expect the usual amount of non- contact time for someone with my level of responisbility. If that didn't happen I would go and point it out to the head but I think the likely outcome woud be to be given the time back, not extra money.

We have our allocated ppa and other time, always timetabled, for line management meetings and/or time allowed for TLR duties, etc. We don't veer from the timetable - what you see is what you get.

Only other extra lesson time happens on things like citizenship days (twice or three times a year) where we are sometimes used for 3 sessions out of 4 (never 4 out of 4).

If I was asked to do any extra like emergency cover for a colleague I'd be more than happy to. Our Head is great and he wouldnt ask us to do anything that wasn't reasonable.

I do - I'm Performing Arts so spend time after school and at weekends (and holidays sometimes) rehearsing for productions. Some yr 9s are doing a performance next month so we'll do a couple of evenings rehearsing and on the performance day I'll be with them until after the performance. When we're doing a school production we always do at least two full days at weekends and last year we did 4 days in the holidays as well.

I do choose to do do so though. If SLT started demanding I work weekends etc I wouldn't be impressed.

If you mean things like extra revision classes then I just do those- see it as part of the job.

Yes. I teach in an independent school though so the usual rules don't apply.

Thank you for the replies. I have been busy with the beginning of term and all.
ER - I realise that independent schools are different, as are some subjects such as PE or drama.

I was just wondering how much people gave for free. I look at some of my colleagues and see the things they take on and ask myself if I am selfish or they are dolts or if they are being paid extra. I never find out .

However as an old part timer I felt that asking me for 14 a term and 15 hopurs a week trapped time ( more hours than I am actually contracted for) unpaid time to babysit and entertain was too much. I just suggested politely that they take their amour elsewhere. No one has come back at me so I think it was being tried on.

Thanks anyway.
