Private prep(?) schools in central London?City? Anyone with direct experience?

Uli · 15/03/2006 17:04

Can anyone suggest a good primary private school in the city/central of london? I have looked at the independent school council site, but has anyone in here any direct experience?

I am that stage where I need to start my research about the best option for my little girl (3 years old). I am struggling to understand the whole thing as I am not British. But I have come to the conclusion that i need to look at the longer term and, as I feel that I have a poor choice of secondary non -religious school in my area (southwark - please correct me if I am wrong in my perception), I am now considering sending dd to private school from primary so she gets the best start in education and if she turns out academic, the best chance to go to a good secondary (private or else).

One thing I cant change is the area I live and I do not want to become religious since I am not. There are no private schools in my area so I need to look at the city or central London.

Maybe we need a thread on Z's mum! How do you know her, foxinsocks?

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2006 19:49

Oooh.

I think this thread is a good argument against calling your child anything starting with Z, actually.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2006 19:50

well if it's who I think it is

it's through dh's work that we know her and her dh

Spatz · 16/03/2006 19:51

I thought Z was one of those names that suddenly became popular and that there were lots of 5yr old Zs out there!

Spatz · 16/03/2006 19:52

What is dh's work foxinsocks?

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2006 19:53

She is blonde, tall, thin and quite glamorous-looking I think? (My standards for glamour may be unduly low.)

foxinsocks · 16/03/2006 19:57

yes that's her! actually it was your 'not very chatty' line that made me think of her

don't want to put what he does on here but it's in the same line of work as her and her dh

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2006 19:58

I have no idea what she does, I'm afraid.

A friend, who is German (my only German friend really, of 'knit hat!' fame), also finds Z's mum not very chatty. So it's not a language/culture thing.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2006 19:59

she does come across that way definitely

Bink · 16/03/2006 20:04

poppadum - we're Abercorn too. Girl in J1, boy in J2. Girl very very happy, though could do with more girls in class, boy less so, but that's more because of him than the school. I wonder if I know you??

Completely agree about the emphasis on sport. I quite like having a 6yo who knows about Aussie Rules.

Spatz · 16/03/2006 20:07

She has become more chatty as the term has gone on, I've found. She's certainly one of the ones who talks at the school gate.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2006 20:08

think she opens up the more you know her

Spatz · 16/03/2006 20:12

I'm a bit of a lurker on here and only post occasionally, but I remember the 'knit hat' story. I'm half german so perhaps you could make me half a hat?

Do you think it's dangerous mixing MN and RL? I've never knowingly met another MNer, but will pluck up the courage to go to a meetup someday.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2006 20:20

Well, you're stuck knowing MN people in real life now.

I didn't have much choice about meeting MN folks, after I introduced myself on here, someone from MN pointed out she knew me in real life. And dinosaur and I did antenatal classes together, eons ago.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2006 20:20

She doesn't seem rude exactly. Just not chatty.

The thing is, her DS1 and my DS1 will be at the same school in September. We live not far from each other (I think) so I'd be interested in sharing lifts or something. I'll have to talk to her, she drops her DS2 at the school my DS1 is currently at.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2006 20:23

you'll have to pretend you don't know me Grin

which area do you live in nqc?

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2006 20:23

I'm in East London. Mile End, essentially.

Spatz · 16/03/2006 20:31

Do I know you, foxinsocks?
I know I'll meet NQC in september whether you want me to or not - I'll be staring so weirdly at all the new mums of boys in september that you'll know it's me and some sign will give you away. Grin

foxinsocks · 16/03/2006 20:34

I don't know! We're not at that school - live in SW london

are you in the same line of work as she is (or her husband)?

Spatz · 16/03/2006 20:36

No, only met her recently. I'm currently a SAHM and didn't work in the same area. Do you?

foxinsocks · 16/03/2006 20:41

no - I'm also a SAHM at the moment

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2006 20:59

Oh, Spatz, I'm very very easy to spot. Very short dark hair, glasses. I'm Canadian, fairly loud, and fairly big. Really, you'll know me when you see me.

Spatz · 16/03/2006 21:41

Excellent NQC - your name could be NotRemotelyCockney! I'm much duller than that - small with blondish hair and a v.blonde DD and I usually have DS with me, who will start school a year later.
Look forward to meeting you!
