availability of school places

My friends are returning to Uk after being away 3 years. they are going back to their house. the LEA have told them they need 3 months notice to find school places. is this correct. they must have a rough idea where they have vacancies surely

Someone who knows more will be along soon but, no it's not true. The LEA have a responsibility to find a child a place as soon as someone with an address in their borough lets them know that they need a place.

It may become clearer over the next few weeks as to which schools have spaces, but no way does the LEA have 3 months to do anything.

I'm not an expert, but where I am you would be offered a place fairly quickly- but it would probably be in an unpopular school a long way from home. None of the popular schools have in-year places, and they are filled almost immediately when someone leaves.

i do not believe they need 3 months notice and said my friend needs to ring them again.

As others have said they LA must come up with a place. It is unlikely to be at a popular school but it really should not take 3 months.

No, this is incorrect. Once you've moved back into your house and can provide a council tax bill, our LEA aims to offer a school place within 10 working days. As mentioned above though, it's likely to be at one of the less popular schools, but they must offer a place somewhere.
