Big life change- Good schools and houses in York- thinking of relocating?

Thinking of a change DH and I quite like York as a base, thinking that it offers good employment chances (in teaching), nice houses and good schools. What is the truth - are our presumptions correct? Have 2 children and 2 dogs so would like access to parks, dog walks and a house with some garden. House budget probably about £200,000 ish. Open to ideas :)

mamawhitaker - the historic City of York is renowned for its exquisite architecture, tangle of quaint cobbled streets and the iconic York Minster. You can walk into the city and enjoy the vibrant cafés, take time out to enjoy some street entertainers or simply watch the world go by whilst sipping a drink by the river.
However, if I were searching for a property in York I would personally advise my clients to avoid areas such as Tanghall and Chapelfields. Your £200k budget should get you a good 3/4 bed in a nice area, but, you probably won't be surprised to hear that you will get more for your money if you look slightly further out of town. Hope this helps.

For 200k you could probably have a two bedroom terrace in a 'nice' bit, or a three bed semi in a less well regarded but still fine area.... Depends how much you want a garden, though!

We have friends who live right in the city centre of York - their 2 bed apartment was vvv expensive but they love the lifestyle - cafe culture, walking to wine bars etc. Parking also is a bit of a mare, bt they wouldn't have it any other way!

We have looked at houses in Haxby and Strensall and were pleasantly surprised at what you could get for your money.

As for teaching you could feasiby commute from York to Malton or Sarborough etc so you'd have quite a big range of schools. Almost all the schools in and around York are ver good. Scarborough less so.

We currently live and work in Whitby, and I'm a teacher. £200K would get you a 3 bed semi in a nice street here. I'm happy to offer more advice if I can. It's a brilliant part of thewold to live in. Smile

Ex went to uni there so know it fairly well as lived with him for a while.

heworth, tang hall not such nice areas.

but fulford outer suberb was nice not sure on prices.

The flats ,houses by river are subject to flooding and quite pricey.

some of outer villages were lovley.

when I worked there lots of people commuted in from selby.

I do miss york but so far from where we are now and memories of ex.

its lovley city feels bit like bath doesnt feel like rest of north. Never any trouble, nice restaurants and shops.

Heworth itself is actually really lovely and a bit more reasonably priced than Bish. Road/Southbank areas. Realistically though you won't get a garden within walking distance of the city centre, but the bus links are very good (but expensive). Fulford also very nice, as are the streets around Haxby Road and the top end of Bootham. Further out the villages such as Bishopthorpe are nice with really good schools.

Personally, I would find a daily commute as far as Scarborough a bit of a stretch (morning traffic would make the journey about an hour +), but you can easily get to Malton, Selby, Pocklington, Easingwold and Tadcaster. All of the areas (apart from maybe Selby) have really good schools.

I have friends in strensall, they're happy there. Primary school I believe is rated as Outstanding. Big park nearby and easy access to country walks.

agree re trip to scarborough on a daily basis, that's a very long drive for commuting.
York is a very lovely city, and lots of good schools. Great quality of life if you can afford to live in the city itself.
