Victorian Art ideas - URGENT!

doglover · 11/03/2006 13:21

I have been asked to plan 3 one hour art lessons for year 6 pupils. Their current topic is the Victorians and the art needs to complement this theme. The Y6 staff are innundated with "SATs stuff" so want really simple activities that require minimal preparation.........all the exciting things happen post-SATs!! They have already drawn artefacts, looked at illustrations from "Alice in Wonderland" and tried William Morris-type printing.
PLEASE,PLEASE PLEASE HELP!! Need to get this organised today.

Maybe use the \link{http://www.victorianweb.org/sculpture/albertmem/index.html\Albert Memorial} as a topic and study the symbolism of the statues and images.

What about paintings which tell a story like Derby Day

BettySpaghetti · 11/03/2006 13:38

Not sure if its the right era exactly (history never was my strong point Wink) but what about those silhouette portrait pictures?
Minimal preparation -all you need is black paper, background paper/card and scissors.

What about stained glass windows show them pics of Burn-jones' work, they could do it with black card as the frames and put coloured tissue paper behind to form the shapes.

The National Gallery do a brilliant serries called 'Take one picture' - one of the past ones was \link{http://www.takeonepicture.org/pub/pdf/notes_degas.pdf'Beach Scene' by Degas}. There are teachers' notes and you can download the image of the painting.

You could start by talking about the picture - differences between a beach scene today, and in Victorian times, then spend some time looking for clues that tell you he actually painted the picture in his studio, not on the beach (notes tell you all about this).

To link to a Y6 scheme you could tie in with 'people in action', looking at how different figures are drawn in action (girl lying down, girl wrapping towel against the cold, man waving to a friend etc). Then they could work in pairs sketching a series of movements with line-drawings (maybe taken from the picture), or could work in groups to make freeze frame tableaus of modern beach scenes with people in action (do you have a digital camera?)....

Sorry, that's v quick and rather confused, but might be the beginnings of something! HTH

Victoriana decorated picture frame with their silouette as the main piece. Could they take digital photos of their profiles, print them out and use them as a template on black paper? Is that a rubbish idea?

I assume you know the key stage 2 schemes of work for Art & Design? They are \link{http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes2/art/?view=get\here} if you don't.

Doesn't sound like they've done People in Action yet. This could be easily linked to the victorian invention of photography and old photos perhaps of local area (your local archives website will probably have some).
Practically could be done using photographs themselves if you have digital cameras available, if not they could do very quick movement drawings and very slow detailed drawing of each other. Both inside and out, looking at different light levels and the way that changes the image.

"In this unit children explore how to convey movement in their work. They explore dynamic activities such as sport, dance, drama and music as a starting point for making work in two dimensions. They look at how the idea of movement is shown in different kinds of art, such as photography, illustrations, cartoons, paintings, prints, and experiment with different methods and techniques to show movement."

I made zoetropes with a year 5 class. Like a round flick book that you peek through using measured slits through the sides. We linked it with work on gears to make the moving bit for it to turn round.

I just looked in here because the thread title intrigued me.

Ladies, you are all amazing. I want any one of you teaching and inspiring my children NOW.

Bafreem · 11/03/2006 21:58

Hi,
try using photo copies of work they have already done on topic x2 and then get them to cut each piece horizontaly and the other virtically,( i suggest 1cm for year 4-6 I've done this with 6th formers at 1/2 cm) then weave them to see effect. - this has been a hit with kids from yr. 4 - 13 from previous experience (poss lesson length 1-2 hrs for yr 6, easily extended to more with colouring/decoration/framing work, or doing the activity on the diaginal, which is a little more challanging for those gifted and talented.
Hope this helps....

doglover · 12/03/2006 22:13

Many thanks agagin for all your help. I've collated the ideas and will pass them onto the Y6 staff. :)
