Can't Believe The School is Shut AGAIN!

My ds primary school is shut again! It was closed Wed-Fri last week as were most of the schools in the area.

Today it is still closed and the weather is fine. Snow is melting and no other school in the area is closed. The only ones I know of are really far North, eg Wick and Thurso.

The catchment area for the school is all local - hardly any children live out of town, if any.

The funny think is the head goes on and on about unauthorised absences!

Have they given any explanation as to why it is shut?

Our school annoys us in the way that if we are a minute late, a late mark goes in the book, but, more often than not, they don't open doors on time and are late letting them out.

I think schools and nurseries make the rules up as they go along

No explaination at all. I wondered if it was a heating issue but I think they should have said that on the radio if it was.

Mistymoo - for some schools the problem is not the children, but the staff. If your staff all have cosy little cottages in the countryside, they might struggle to make the journey in bad weather.

My school shut last friday as the taxis wanted to take the kids home (sn school) but at my house it was really sunny with no snow!

where r u mistymoo?

We got a letter from DD's school last Friday saying that due to the heavy snow forecast next )week the school may have to close - please check website! We RARELY get snow here and certainly never heavy!! And its not like we are in the middle of nowhere! I think its the teachers looking for an excuse to bunk! Grin

And as DH says - when he was little he lived in a small village in Wales and the local school took kids from 30 odd miles away via school bus and his school never shut due to snow! - regardless of how deep it was!

It always pays to check your local radio station, as they tend to give out the closures

I don't think that you can compare a closure due to an act of God, ie the weather, with people electing to take holidays in term time.

There are also safelty issue, like the kids falling in the playground. And also the possibility that some kids could get trapped in school if the weather took a turn for the worse.

And as roisin says, staff may not live in the area.

The 'teachers' don't make the choice....so they don't 'choose' to bunk.

I live in the Highlands, north of Inverness.

I'm not saying the teachers are bunking off school! Grin

I know most of the teachers and they all live locally and could get into school. The fact that all the other schools in the town are open, another 2 primary schools and 1 academy and the rural schools were also open makes me wonder why our school was closed.

I do think the head made a premature judgement as it was announced in the first set of announcements of school closures and I have heard schools added a lot later that that before!

When our school was closed for any reason, teachers had to go in if possible or work from home as it was part of the contacted days. Not sure if it's the same in Scotland though.

Mistymoo · 06/03/2006 21:37

I'm not really bothered whether the teachers were working or not, I just don't understand why it was closed. The weather was fine and although there is snow on the ground it is not stopping anything else happening.

Have you asked the head or teachers why? Perhaps it was a heating issue.
