DD signs - it takes a while for them to start. We started Sing and Sign classes at six months, and she did her first sign at 9 months. Now at 20 months she signs and talks. You also need to sign in conversation with your child - classes once a week won't teach them on their own!

Signing is fantastic! Started when ds1 was 6months, went to classes, signed at home watched dvd at home. It didn't seem to be working, then suddenly a few months later, he started signing lots! Talking too! By 12months old, he was signing AND speaking sentences, albeit basic. He's 6 now and still occasionally signs, hard habit to break. I've started signing at home with ds2, thinking of taking him to classes too.
It really is worth persevering with. Try to get other family members to use signs too when talking to your Lo.

Keep at it and get everyone else involved with the basics.
Ds1 used it when he got the hang of it and still signs" please" at 2 1/2 for emphasis ( which is very cute).
I hear it doesn't develop speech any faster
In children with no developmental issues but I really enjoyed the added level of communication.

Stick with it, very useful.

It's still useful when your children are 6, you are upstairs vacuuming and don't hear the doorbell.

But your friend can get the attention of your child and sign through the window to 'get mummy'.
