According to the stats, there were 313340 state KS5 students in England.
Of them 2280 or 0.73 % went to Oxbridge
and 28890 or 9.2% went to the whole Russel group.

I'll keep digging but I suspect that a fair few of the 0% schools were in grammar areas ....

I suspect a lot of it is to do with the attitude of different schools. It was quite an eye-opener to do the rounds of the local state secondaries (non-grammar school area) when ds was ready to go. One school was very into supporting pupils of varying abilities and extending their learning whilst another school (not the academy this time, Talkin Wink) seemed to view their role more or less as one of protecting their pupils from all that nasty academic stuff. And yet the demographic intake is not all that different. One school seemed to have given up, the other had no intention of giving up.

Yes, there are plenty of very good unis which aren't part of the Russell Group - from the Guardian rankings, the following top 20 unis aren't in it (though I know some of these are joining shortly): St Andrews, Durham, Lancaster, Bath, Exeter, Loughborough, Surrey, Buckingham, York, Leicester and Heriot-Watt (?!). Queen's Belfast, for example, which is in the RG, is down at no. 53, and Sheffield at 42, Liverpool at 45 - and so on. So really I can't understand why RG is used as a measure of rating universities.

Woodlands
The RG are research universities - that was the reason for the group founding, not just top rank.

And why the ?! after Heriot-Watt .... its not well known outside its field but for computing and some applied engineering its been in the top ten nationally since I was an A level student. It used to specialise in HNDs for those without A levels and churn out practical people who ran projects.

Talkin the RG were formed by the bigger research universities at that time. The 1994 Group were also research universities, and some research unis did not join either Group (such as Aston).

While massively out of date now, the RAE data, did not place the RG at the top of every subject, they are first and foremost a lobbying group on behalf of their members. Indeed in some areas, the ex-polys did better than RG unis in research rankings

I went to a grammar school and then a "new" university and don't understand the point of this argument. Would I get it if I'd gone to a RG uni?

with the ever increasing independence of schools who take the Academy route what influence will the local LEA's have re standards? Genuine question as in an area where few fantastic school (everyone tries to get into) and the rest struggling to achieve average results, yet almost all seem now to be Academies either from when they were converted as failing schools (to take them out of the statistics perhaps [synical emoticon]) or because they are one of the 3 good ones. Early indications here are that the schools that have converted are doing well but I am not convinced by what I have seen that they will hold the momentum and (apart from the 3 mentioned earlier) certainly don't seem to be encouraging going for the more competitive Russell Group Uni's when you speak to them at open evenings.

forgot to mention 3 of my 4 that have been through Uni were going for sciences so Russell Group particularly interesting, the artist went for the best uni's in her subject area. 2 dc's left, 1 of which is showing clear interest in science/maths - so he'll probably be looking at Russell Group as well. And the last dd would like a degree in mermaids please, not sure where we will start with that one.
