Hi,

Sorry if this has come up before - but is there a list of alternative/green schools I can access?

Thanks

just bumping this for you. where are you?
there's a school in the woods outside bath, in freshford. then there are the STEINER lot - see other threads - and the dharma school in brighton.I always fancied that for my dds but we live in london.

Contact www.hse.org.uk/ (human scale education) who may be able to help.

my ds1 went to the nursery unit of \link{http://www.park-school.info\parkschool} (human scale education) i can't recommend it highly enough - life changing!
you may also be interested in montessori or steiner schools. there is a place called penn green ( i think) which is based on the \link{http://zerosei.comune.re.it/inter/reggiochildren.htm\reggio schools}
which area are you for?

lunavix · 04/03/2006 19:30

there's a lush montessori one in oxford

Great list, shrubs.

Am going to add two links though Grin

The excellent \link{http://www.openwaldorf.com/\openwaldorf}, which is written by a slightly skeptical Steiner/Waldorf (same thing, 2 different names) parent.

Just to say, each steiner/waldorf school is independent of each other, they all "feel" very different. I went to a Steiner kindergarten and it was pretty hardcore, so was quite skeptical, but our local Steiner kindergarten is basically a hub for hippy/alternative parents.

Also, has anyone posted \link{http://www.summerhillschool.co.uk/\Summerhill}?

What is it with me? I can kill threads like nobody's business!

zippitippitoes · 05/03/2006 09:02

I was going to add Summerhill but thought it might be too alternative! Smile

festiveface · 05/03/2006 09:36

wow! didn't even realise anything like summerhill existed! that made interesting reading.

This might be of interest to you, although not a list of schools it has some interesting info relating to gren/environmental education and the whole site is about sustainable living \link{http://www.greenchoices.org/schools.html\ Green choices for schools and education}

Lewes New School is alternative and very eco-friendly if it is anywhere near you. As the name suggests it's in Lewes, East Sussex.

LazyWoman · 07/03/2006 15:08

Hi again & thanks for all your input,

I've checked out all the links I wasn't already aware of. We currently live in West Sussex and are planning a possible move to Southsea/Portsmouth in Hampshire. There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of choice about, especially for older children. I'm going to have to get my thinking cap on here.

The Summerhill site makes interesting reading although I can't find their fees published anywhere. Also, wasn't there a documentary a couple of years ago about AS Neill and an educational experiment he undertook (was it the flower children or something?) If my memory serves me well, the project was a complete failure and it was abandoned. Was this the same person or somebody else?

Bye for now...
