Renting in catchment area...legitimately!

We are and have always rented. We are considering moving (as current house being sold) to a flat within the catchment area of A Very Good Primary. We would move to a house but they're all too expensive for us, as we'll be paying for 2 x nursery fees. We are not moving for the sake of the school - it's a very nice round floor flat next to a huuuuuuge park. My DS is 2 years old. So hypothetically, we move to this flat, DS gets into good school, all is well. Ultimately we DO want to buy a house, but it would be outside of this area to a more affordable area (like, a mile away). I would buy a house or flat even in the area of the school, but waaaaaay outside of my affordability. Would DS be cast out of school for moving away? Would my daughter also chance not getting into the same school? Am I breaking any rules? Basically, the school being brilliant is a perk and we're not trying to work the system, but I'm worried it might appear so....

Your ds would keep his place but you may risk your dd's applciation going down the priority list unless siblings count above distance. Some areas break this down to Siblings within catchment /Siblings outside and you may even find that applications from Non-Siblings within catchment have higher priority than Siblings outside. Check the current criteria but bear in mind the LA could amend these in the interim.

You are NOT "playing the system"

However when you apply from a rented flat for the primary be prepared to be queried, but you can deal with that by making the point its your only residence and so forth. You may get a home visit to check that what you say is plausible but again no problem, you will obviously be really living there!

We did the same thing. We moved to a rented house in a fab catchment area about 18 months before dd1 was due to start school. The school is about 100 yards away or we could throw them over the back fence in the morning. Dd2 started the year after. I never felt like we were doing anything wrong. We still like in the same house 5 years on and will be here for a few more years yet.
