Help! Are Vikings still taught on the National Curriculum at KS 2??

I am in the process of buying my nephew his christmas present over the internet (he is in the UK and I am in NZ!) and found this great CD and book about Norse legends ... so I wondered if the Vikings are still a feature in the education of 7-9 year olds ...
He is currently in Year 2 ...
Oh ... and if not ... what about Greeks? Ancient Egyptians? In fact has anything changed recently I ought to know about?????
Cheers!

ds2 did Vikings in Y4, 2 years ago. Hasn't done Greeks or Egyptians - did do Victorians I think. And possibly Tudors.

HTH!

all of thise topics are taught in ks2 - when exactly they are taught differs depending on the school...
just a thought....does the school have a website?
our school website has curriculum guides which tell you which years the different topics are taught....

My daughter is year 2 and they have just done Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London - she knows far more than I did! I know that they will be doing Florence Nightingale later this year - don't know if that helps.

At our school, they study the Vikings in Year 4.

DD1 is currently in Year 3 and is studying Ancient Egyptians at the moment. Absolutely loved the "Horrible Histories Awesome Egyptians".

They also do the Celts and Romans in Year 4 and Tudors in Year 5.

it really does depend on the school but between year 3 and 6 they will cover all of the topics mentioned....

I was a secondary history teacher - and I think that vikings may be an optional unit that a school can select

British history

  1. In their study of British history, pupils should be taught about:

a) the Romans, AngloSaxons and Vikings; Britain and the wider world in Tudor times; and either Victorian Britain or Britain since 1930

b) aspects of the histories of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, where appropriate, and about the history of Britain in its European and wider world context, in these periods.

Romans, AngloSaxons and Vikings in Britain

  1. An overview study of how British society was shaped by the movement and settlement of different peoples in the period before the Norman Conquest and an indepth study of how British society was affected by Roman or AngloSaxon or Viking settlement. Examples for 9: Romans, AngloSaxons and Vikings in Britain Note for 9
