Moving to Reading area

Hi everyone,

My DH has been offered a job based in Reading city centre (near the train station) and we are planning to relocate in this area from Edinburgh.

We have 3 children still in primary schools (aged 11 (will be 12 yo in September 2012), 10 and 7 yrs old) and we need to find a place to live with good state secondary and primary school (going private is not an option for us). We're planning to move within the next 3-4 months and my DS would start secondary school in September 2012 in England.

The 3 children train in a swimming club many times a week and they enjoy being part of a sailing club so being near those facilities would be handy. They also do other activities such as Suzuki piano and Tae-Kwon-do so we are a lot in and out of the house to go places.

I work from home at the moment but maybe not for ever. We would like to be able to walk to shops and services and maybe to school (or to cycle to it).

My DH doesn't mind commuting 20-30 min but would equally like being closer to work if it was possible.

I looked at places like either Caversham (looks very lovely, good secondary school but no idea if we would manage to get in being so last minute... and I don't want to go to the other Reading city secondary school as I heard the bridge can be very busy in the morning), Wokingham (seems a little far to commute for DH but schools look great), Early (I don't know much about the area), Twyford (seems nice but maybe a bit too quiet?).

Many thank of any help or hint or suggestions...!

this was covered recently. Personally, I'd say as close to RDG as possible, because the travel is crap. Would your DH cycle? If so Woodley/Earley/Charvil/Hurst/Twyford (if he's good) are possible, also train/bus a possibility. Caversham is nice too.

Thanks MrsTrellisOfSouthWales, I'll go and have a look at this other thread. Yes he could probably cycle so that opens our options. The main worry remains whether our DS will get into the secondary school (being in Caversham or in a Wokingham council school)...

Wokingham is a pretty fast commute in by train. You will discover in the SE lots of people commute an hour or more. If your husband is working near the station, I would be looking at commuting by train.
