CfE Reports - has anyone had one that actually says how their DC is progressing?

DD2 and DD3 came home with their end of year reports today. There is a last box, with personal comments from their teachers, in both cases giving what I'd say are accurate and constructive assessments of their personalities.

But I have no idea how they are "getting on" at school.

I know DD3 "experienced" taking part in the play because I was there.
I know DD2 "experienced" Edinburgh Castle, because I paid for the trip.
I know DD2 can research weather and climate, because it was homework.
I know DD3 can re-tell the story of Rama and Sita, because she has been doing that since nursery (now in P3) ffs.

Does anyone get one of these new style reports that actually tells them what progress their DC are making, rather than what topics have been "covered" during the year? I think the difference is really important. It would be entirely possible to read one of these reports, and not have a clue about literacy or numeracy ability. Can't decide if I am Sad, or Hmm, or Angry.

Thanks Euphemia. The Es & Os are there, but I think my gripe is that that is all there is. Both DDs (P3 and P5) are at exactly where you'd expect for every single level. ie DD2 "developing" at L2 for everything, and DD3 "consolidating" at L1 for everything. Bang on for P3 and P5. I think it is that, that makes me feel it's a bit of a tick box exercise.

eg DH and I think that DD2 has made massive massive leaps in her literacy this year. She's gone from being mid class not very keen, to never has her nose out of a book, top reading set. This isn't reflected anywhere in her report though. As a parent, that sort of change is absolutely something I'd look for a comment about. Her teacher is an absolute sweetheart though, and I wouldn't see any point in giving her a hard time because both DDs reports have the same style, so I'm sure they're following council guidelines.

I think in reflection I'm mainly Hmm, but would really like to hear what you make of yours when you get it. Smile

We'll get our reports next week. Ds is in P7. I found the "Levels" bit in his report last year as much good as a chocolate teapot - so broad as to be meaningless, especially with no indication as to what level is the "norm" for (at the time) a P6 child.

However, to be fair the teacher had spent a massive amount of time into the "text" boxes, describing how well and what ds was doing, so we felt OK about disregarding the circles/levels and just going by the descriptions.

I'll let you know on Thursday if my opinion has changed!

All I know is dd was asked to sit online tests to give an idea of the range of abilities. The reports were the same as always but with out the Level. Dd had reached all her level D's by the end of P5 so not sure where else they put her.

The only thing I felt was that the report seemed less copied and pasted on previous years.

Just got ds' school report. As I recalled from last year, the Levels are so broad as to be meaningless.

Early=Pre-school years and P1, or later for some
First=To the end of P4, but earlier or later for some
Second=To the end of P7, but earlier or later for some
Third and Fourth=S1 to S3 but earlier for some.

And then a Venn diagram with overlapping circles labelled "Secure", "Developing" and "Consolidating" with "The Learner" in the middle

Ds (in P7) was "Second" for everything (as he was last year in P6) - but no indication as to where he was in terms of the "circles". Now we know, because we are involved parents, that he is doing extremely well and that he is "Secure" in all areas. But you'd have to infer that from the the text. We also know that he is one of the brightest in his class so whatever level he is working at must be appropriate for his year (as long as he's not finding it too easy Wink)

To be fair, the text is a good and accurate reflection of his abilities and much better than the "cut and paste" (I believe it was actually "drop down" choices) of the reports from the early years at primary school.

Example:
[ds] has worked very hard this year. He has developed both confidence and competence in all aspects of numeracy and mathematics. He is able to solve problems, analyse information and make informed decisions based on his calculations. He can expplain his thinking and sow an understanding of number processes and concepts.
It has been a pleasure working with [ds] and I wish him the very best for secondary. I am sure he will do well

That one was written by the headteacher, as she takes the "top" P7 group for Maths.

I think I'm going to feedback to the school that they should make it clearer in their reports "where" in the Levels the child is: even if it is a mix of two of the circles.

I haven't yet received this years report. As I understand it this report will be the first full CfE one i.e. last year we still were getting the A-F levels.

I always looked at the math and english levels first then the general summation/ teachers free hand report. The rest was just blah.. In considering how much blah there was I came to the conclusion less blah = happier parents

Just had my two kids reports P7 and P6 and have to say that there are loads of words but I haven't a clue whether they are doing well really. (Not true as I know that they are from parents night!) but you can't tell from the reports. The P7 one is slightly less anonymous but is very formulaic and guess that most of the phrases have been selected from a drop down list. The P6 one is by a newer teacher and she hasn't managed to hide that at all - I have lots of info about what activities have been undertaken and whether my son "always" or "sometimes" does them but I don't know if in the example of sometimes, if that's a good thing. For example is the fact that he only sometimes does it a problem, or is it actually something above what he should be doing and therefore the fact that he sometimes does it is great Confused.

From my own point of view, I know that they are above the level they should be going by past info, and their behaviour is very good so I wonder if it maybe comes out better if there is more to write about? i.e. is there only so much you can say about a child who works hard, behaves well and is academic??
