Transition to Secondary - SENCO's

At this time of year, what information do secondaries tend to have on the children arriving from primary?

Do you generally have enough information to determine if a child coming to your school in Sept may have SEN? Even if they are not recognised as having SEN in primary?

What information could flag a child up for you as having SEN requirements?

Thanks. I'm asking on behalf of somebody else so I don't have too many details available.

You could phone up the secondary school and ask for a chat with the SENCO. I did this and subsequently went in for a meeting. They were way more on the ball than junior school and have been great.

as a norm we have detailed information on every child who is due to start with us in September. This is in paper form, meetings with their year 6 teachers and transition events.

If you feel that there are needs that have not been acknowledged/met by the primary then I concur with niceweather - call the secondary school and arrange a meeting with the senco to discuss the issues and plan the next steps.

I would ask though - what needs to do you perceive your dc to have that the primary school have not concurred with?

Thanks Nice and Cricket.

As I said in OP not my child.

Asking on behalf of somebody else, who has been invited to a SEN transition meeting by the secondary. They are not aware why.

The current head of the primary is being helpful, but has only recently taken over the school and has said records/systems are in a bit of a mess/non-existent.

Will tell them to phone secondary.

Our senior school Senco goes outs and visits primaries. I saw the previous one because DD1 is dyslexic. They are both really helpful and put you at your ease.

Friend needs to ring primary and ask why the meeting has been arranged, but not to worry. The senior school SEN staff are generally far more clued up than primary's.
