How do I get my DD in Yr5 to check over her work for mistakes?

Could anyone please advise how I can get my DD who is in Y5 to check over her work? We did a test run today of a SATS maths paper and she made silly mistakes. We have been informed by her teacher that she needs to re read her work and check for mistakes.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Proof reading of written work is best done backwards so that the eye does not become lazy and just skim over mistakes. Could you make a game of it, with a small reward if she spots it before you do?

10p fee per silly mistake. For charity, of course...

I did a version of this to my year 2 DS yesterday just to prove a point after he was insistent that he does follow instructions and check his work. I'm not sure if it would be any good for a year 5 though?

gave not did

Muffinflop I love that! Am definitely going to give it to DD1 (also Yr5) and watch the fun!

Love that test. I am going to try it on my DS (year 6), who makes loads of mistakes. I won't tell him I failed it!

That's great muffinflop.

I did it with my DD last night and she failed. She's Y5 and just come home with her worst ever maths test result. I spoke to her teacher this morning and she's concerned that DD is skimming things rather than reading them properly. Maybe this will prove to her that she has to read things through & check them!

My DD, also year 5, is similar in not following instructions but has been done a number of 11 + papers now, plus sat some music theory exams, and she's improving. I think this is one area where 'practice makes perfect'. Maybe not perfect, but better, anyhow.

Right, tried it on my Year 4 8 yo and my year 5 10 year old.
Yr 4 did the whole thing ( but not in the 3 minutes, she insisted on carrying on) and had an almighty tantrum when she got to the end and realised she didn't need to.
Yr 5 actually read the whole thing through and did it correctly. I am amazed!

Hi, thanks for all the advice.

We tried the paper again, this time explaining to my DD that she must check over it again and also, 10p fee for every silly mistake. Guess what! 5 silly mistakes, which cost her 10p each, she wasn't too happy, but it did make her think and yes she handed over the 50p, which was placed in the charity pot!
I've printed out the directions, and will give this a go, so fingers crossed again! Cheers
