Scottish primary schools.

I know that we don't do SATs and stuff, but is there any way in which one could say that X primary is "better" than Y primary, especially with regard to dyslexia?

(Suspect there isn't, which is OK, just curious at this point.)

I have no idea. But would be interested to know the answer. (if there is one).

Think in Scotland, where I am anyway, you're more restricted to your catchment area. But I could be hugely wrong on that, as I applied for dds school place from 250 miles away with no idea where exactly I would be living!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/04/2012 20:11

Yes, I think it's all done by catchment, certainly was when my dc were school age. (So much more sensible than the "choice" they don't have south of the border!) It's about where my dgs will live when the times comes.

I think I remember from another thread that you're quite near to me.

I fell lucky and dd got a good school. I had to use my grans address as was looking like we would have to stay there until we got our own place.

It didn't come to that as I got a house in the same area just before we moved.

You could always go to visit the potential schools and ask them about their dyslexia provision.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/04/2012 20:53

Not really my place, but will mention it to ds. Dgs isn't even three yet so I'm probably overthinking the dyslexia thing! Blush

OldLady Grin Now that truly is planning ahead!

All state schools in Scotland, primary and secondary publish their annual attainment results (alongside the private schools) in the Good Schools Guide. This also includes details about free school meal uptake. There are different versions of this, by location and I'd suggest it's where you start. I think it also shows catchment areas. In Scotland you can apply for schools out with your catchment area, however the best performing ones are highly sought after. Good luck!

Thank you. :)

Our area did catchment area allocation and the schools were much the same. My son has dyslexia and the school were reluctant to diagnose it. We had him assessed by Dyslexia Action and once diagnosed the school were helpful in doing Toe by Toe with him and allowing him extra time for copying from board etc.

Ds's first primary school were also reluctant to diagnose dyslexia they seemed to think it was justs thick middle class kids. (Both of dgs' parents have dyslexia hence my concern re him!) The second school (we moved for dh's work) were great, he was diagnosed within weeks.
