How long does a child need to be missing from school before the school is obliged to provide support in preventing said child from falling behind?

Do your schools send home work or at least provide a list of material that can be covered at home.

DS (12/Year 8) is off school for an unknown period, could be one more day or several weeks. Will depend on the result of blood test and further GP visit. Need to know what the school's obligations are toward preventing him from falling too far behind. I'm worried because he has already missed quite a lot of school this year and had really hoped that this last term would go well.

Gosh what a worrying time for you.

I would have thought that the school would provide work if you DS is off for over a week. I guess it would depend on how they felt he was doing overall. Is he behind in his work due to previous absences off school?

My DD hasn't had much time off school sick but one of her friends was off for 3 days and the teacher sent work home with her sister.

Thanks.

Have already asked the school and they have said that as a general rule they don't send work home. I'll have to ask again at what point they deem it necessary to do some work at home.

If your child will miss more than 3 weeks of school, it is the responsibility of the LA to arrange alternative provision.

I was going to write the same thing. LEAs have ofstead inspected schools in hospitals with paediatric wards and children who are off sick from school will often attend daily teachers can also come to your child's home.

Dd (Yr 10) is having a long term absence due to a combination of pain disorder and stress/anxiety. Her school have been very helpful: she emails the teachers and they send her work/reading lists via email.

We always send work home. Our emails are available to students and parents.
