Homework Helper. Good Idea?

I am looking at work I can do from home that will fit around my new son who is now 13 weeks old.

I am a qualified primary teacher and love working with children.

I am looking into an idea I had about homework helping sessions, a bit like homework clubs. My idea is that I have a homework group each evening where parents pay for their children to come so that I can help with homework. A little like tutoring but with thier homework and in a group environment. I was thinking probably a max number of 5 children so that I could help all of them, and ages ranging from 7 to 11. I thought of running it from 3 - 6 and the children could come between those times and the parents pay for the number of times a week they come.

I was just wondering what other people's thoughts were on this. Would you use the serivce yourself? Can you see problems with it? Do you think it is a good idea? Any comments people have really.

The idea came about after hearing the MANY parent comments about them not knowing how to help with the homework; either not knowing how to do it or not knowing how to help without giving the answers.

Thanks for helping.

Would you do school pick up?
Would you provide snacks/dinner (looking at your times)?

Would you need to be child minder registered?
Would you need an up to date police check record thingy?

Thanks for your reply Hulababy.

School pick-up myabe a problem depending how many kids and how many different schools, but if same school and 3 kids or under I could do pick up.

As with other after school clubs or extended day clubs run by schools children could bring snacks to the group but I would supply drinks. I could supply snacks if they would prefer. Probably not dinner though. Kids could come anytime between 3 and 6 and stay for an hour or so, so could then go home for tea.

I have been registered as a child minder before, so would check this - good point.

I already have a police record CRB check but would check whether I would need another - different one.

Good questions - thanks!!!!

Thanks Batters

My son will be with my parents in my house but a different part.

Not sure about secondary as have never taught them but will bear it in mind.

School pick up and snacks could be arranged but would depend on parent's preferences and arrangements.

Think I would only use this if it was a full after school package. I work full time and only get home around 6 p.m. I find it very difficult to fit in cooking a meal with supervising hoemwork and getting kids to bed at a decent hour! So someone who would pick up, supervise homewrok and then continue the after school care until 6 p.m. woudl be great!

I agree with scotlou - think for many parents, as I suspect it would be primarily working parents using the service, it would have to be the full service. More like a childcare PLUS service - child care with a difference I guess.

Enthusia · 06/02/2006 12:30

That is a really interesting idea - a bit like childminding but only after school. So if I could pick up, supervise homework, cook a meal etc that would be more useful!?

Do you think there would be more of a need for that kind of service? Would until 6 be long enough? What about dropping the kids off at school? How much do you think you'd pay for that kind of service?

Sorry if asking too many questions but it is an interesting idea.

Agree with all the posts about the full afterschool package cum childcare. Working parents would be your target group.

tigermoth · 06/02/2006 12:38

definitely need to offer a full afterschool package.

If you present it as a homework club first and foremost, does that mean you'll take full responsibility for each child doing their set homework? I a child tells you they don't want to do their work, will you have some sort of reward/discipline system, like school, or go with the flow and simply let them do something else as long as they are good?

scotlou · 06/02/2006 12:46

I pay £ 7.50 per session for kids club (3 - 6 p.m., incl. snacks). However, this is for a club with around 15 kids in a school hall. I would probably pay a bit more for more "personalised" childcare. Check out what after school clubs / child minders charge in your area.
