Calling all teachers! AVCs on your pension anyone?

Does anyone make AVCs to their teacher's pension? I didn't contribute to my pension for the 10 years that I was out of teaching having my family, and need to build up a pension pot quite a bit.

I'm 40 this year and so only have about 7 years total. I work part time now, my salary is around 18k but I would like to be making contributions equivalent to a full time salary, and also begin to claw back some of the non-contributing years.

If anyone can advise on whether it is best to do AVCs through the Prundential as they have the contract with the TPS? Or do the additional £250 payments? Or some other way. And what sort of amount should I be looking to contribute? Do you get tied in to contributing for some time? I am fortunate that my salary is not crucial to the family finances at the moment so the more I can save, the better. But I have to be aware that situations do change.

Any help would be gratefully received.
