World Book Day - Help with dressing up ideas

DD is almost 5, and in reception. We have been given advance warning by the class rep that the children may be able to dress up as a character from a book on 3 March, which is World Book Day.

I know dd will want to participate, and need some suggestions about possible chararcters she could dress up as. Please note, I am not handy with a needle and thread (huge understatement) so won't be able to whip up a mermaid outfit from a box of sequins, or a lion costume from a string mop! I don't want to wimp out and send her in as a fairy princess. Creative and easy ideas needed please!

Adlib with an ELC outfit? They're not too expensive, look good and will last for aeons after as a toy... Ds1 was the knight from The Kiss that Missed This Way. Dss also have dr outfit, pirate outfit and wizard outfit which could have been used. HTH

Angelina Ballerina? It will be a popular choice I guess but you can get lovely AB outfits from Woolies and ELC.
Or she could be Pippi Longstocking with bunches and stripy tights, but that's only going to appeal if she knows the books

My dd went as Alice in Wonderland last year-she wore a smart dress from her own wardrobe.I made a pinny and she carried a small plastic bottle saying drink me.

The outfit didnt cost anything and dd looked lovely and was happy in her outfit.

But the dressing up stuff in Woolies is fab and will be worn time after time

Can only offer boy-type suggestions, I'm afraid but easiest ones we ever did were Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs (normal clothes but plastic bucket with plastic dinosaurs in) and the cat in the hat (made a paper tube hat and painted it stripey red and white).

These are great, thanks.

I had thought of suggesting she wear a pair of shorts, a white cotton shirt that buttons up the front, a pair of wellies, and carry a Pooh bear - but I'm not sure how she would react to the idea of going as Christopher Robin!

Any other ideas? Don't want my lack of imagination and creativity to be on display to the entire school!

Tintin, Julia! Ds has the makings of the quiff and a pair of terracotta cords to tuck into long socks.

Witch is easy, can be winnie the witch or Meg from Meg and Mog. DS went as a witch so can be either sex

Also thought perhaps she could go in a long, old-fashioned looking nightgown (and what else?) and tell everyone she's Wendy from Peter Pan.....

Who else has inspired ideas? Will consider uninspired ideas too.....

Still thinking about this, as I'm hoping for a clever/truly inspired idea......

Another idea is to dress dd up as a cat and say she's Pussycat (from The Owl and the Pussycat), or Slinky Malinki (Lynley Dodd).

Other ideas?

Vaguely old-fashioned clothes, a little wardrobe made out of a box and a toy lion?

Dd was Angelina one year and Dorothy the next, but she had a hand-sewn Dorothy dress and just took a little basket with a dog in it, and wore plaits.

Nothing truly inspired to offer though sorry.

Posey · 04/02/2006 22:19

Trying to think about dd's friends from previous years. They are a bit older though so there were Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings characters.
Other ones included Minnie Mouse, Mary Poppins, Little Red Riding Hood, Dorothy from Wizard of Oz.

Am sure this subject crops up each year. Do a search and you may get some more ideas. Good luck!

Bumping for K-Bear....
