Just curious!

You'd need to say whether it's Y7-11 or 13, mind!

Ours is Y7-11, 280 per year, 1450 in the school but I know there are bigger ones.

On the dfe site it says the total number of kids from age 11 - 19 at Harris South Norwood is 1572 though.

I think that could be 390 spread across 2 sites (they have just absorbed Westwood school which may be Harris Upper Norwood now).

The South Norwood site is horribly cramped with very little outdoor space.

I went to a school with c.1250 kids across 11-16. It was pretty crap, and remains so with a similar admission number (no other options in the area realistically). I don't think the number of kids had anything to do with how terrible it was though.

KathyBeale · 25/03/2016 21:21

My kids' primary school has six classes in each year as well as two or three special needs classes. The infants and juniors are separate (though next door to each other and v closely linked) else it would be one of the biggest primary schools in the country I think.

The important thing is that the number of pupils is NOT the issue
pastoral care IS

small schools can be shit
big schools can be great

This thread gives me the heebie jeebies. I deliberately looked for a small school for my kids, and went for the smallest I could find that I was happy with.

UniS overstates Ivybridge somewhat. It has around 2,250 pupils.

Holyrood RC Secondary claims to be Europe's largest school. It isn't. With around 2,000 pupils it is a long way from being the largest in the UK.

Exmouth Community College has a capacity of 2,850 pupils but only has 2,382 on the roll.

I believe the Nottingham Academy is the largest state school by capacity with the ability to cater for 3,600 pupils across 3 sites. However, it only has around 2,200 pupils.

I believe the largest post-11 state school by pupil numbers is currently Ashfield in Nottingham which has 2,492 pupils.

If we include straight through schools and independent schools I believe the largest is the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle in London with nearly 3,900 pupils.

KayJBee · 25/03/2016 22:13

Not the biggest but our local secondary is around 2150 11-18. Currently 11 form entry but will increase to 12 forms in yr 7 in 2017. 330 per year 7-11 then 250 per year in 6th form. It's split across 2 sites at opposite ends of town so there is 20 mins between each lesson to allow staff to commute between the sites.

anthony
Why?
genuine question, I'm interested to know why you want small cohorts right through

TalkinPeace · 25/03/2016 22:24

NB Peter Symonds is running at just under 1500 per year group
but it is only Y12 and Y13

LaurieFairyCake · 25/03/2016 22:26

A sixth form college in Luton has 2700+ pupils

lljkk · 25/03/2016 22:28

hahaha, where I went to school, 3000+ not remarkable.

Unicow · 25/03/2016 22:37

The school DD just got into is 300 per year. The pastoral support is excellent. Each year group has a dedicated pastoral support person which remains the same for all 5 years as does the kids form teacher. Extra pastoral support is also available. I was scared by the size but it's an amazing school with fantastic facilities and results.

giraffesCantReachTheirToes · 25/03/2016 22:39

Holyrood in Glasgow is huge - my best friend and my boyfriend both went there and never met each other before me! I would at least recognise the face/name of someone within 4 years either way of me from my school

Just realised this is a zombie thread from 2012

3asAbird · 29/03/2016 09:03

Local senior school near me definitely biggest in south Gloucestershire is Winterborne international academically 300 a year and has 6th form so think capacity for 3000 all new build
Looked around last sept felt huge.

Average size of bog standard comp in bristol seems to be 210-240.

Anything under 200 considered small and most faith schopos or high performing state lottery schools John cabot;Colston girls and bristol cathedral.

Saw documentary on big primary school in Essex

Birth rates primary rose so boom will hit senior schools and maybe make them bigger.

Think largest primary intake here is 120 4 form but don't have many.
