Very Little Non Verbal Reasoning 9 yr old boy

Wondering if anyone can give me some pointers on how to help. I was at my sons parents evening and was told that although his verbal reasoning was excellent, he had very little non verbal reasoning. This explains why he is having so much trouble with his handwriting which is very poor and he is also having great trouble with his maths. His other scores were good so his overall score for dyslexia is low.I'm just wondering where we go from here. Whether there is anything I can do to help him or what sort of problems will arise at secondary school. Would love to hear back with some ideas.

My son has terrible handwriting and much better VR than non-NR: he's rubbish at maths. He's dyspraxic and has some specific learning difficulties to do with working memory and organising his thinking. It's not easy to "fix" but the ed. psych whom he sees from time to time suggests good and helpful techniques which are then discussed with his school Learning Support department.

I would suggest that you have him see an ed. psych. It just really helps to know exactly what you are dealing with. Do not be fobbed off with an Occupational Therapist

My DS exactly the same. Not dyslexic, but dyspraxic. Occupational therapist gave us some hand strengthening exercises. I have taught him how to do non verbal reasoning which has improved his score. However, I think there is only so much you can do. I have accepted that he will never be an engineer, but he might be a poet!

Thank you very much for your replies. Sorry to be late back but I was away from any internet access. Looks like I'll have to go down the Ed. Psych road, do I get a referral from the GP or find one in the yellow pages?

We got a recommendation from the school. I think that there may be a professional body with a website: have a Google
