If so, how old were they and how did you go about it?

oh yes the song
ds1 has it all cracked now at 4.9yrs and this morning from the bunk beds I heard him and ds2, 2.4yrs singing it by alternating the letters together

Who ever owns the rights to that song must be minted

Nemo1977 · 29/01/2006 14:14

we also used/use the song. Ds is 27mths and we started doing it about 3wks ago as he was more interested in numbers. He now knows about half the alphabet/recognise letters but can sing the song pretty much through.

Piffle · 29/01/2006 14:53

dd 3.4 knows all the letters and their sounds, she has done this alone pretty much with a leap frog phonics radio and fridge phonics game. She can also count pretty high, she has a fairly astounding memory we are noticing...

mszebra · 29/01/2006 14:55

There is a British alphabet song (Zed and all), DH's aunt knows it, maybe I'll get her to teach me.

dd is 3 and knows most of the letters and has started to recognise words - has been doing so for about a year

she can also count to 40 - I discovered this this morning when I said (irritated) "I will do X if you sit on the floor and count to 100" - she then proceeded to attempt this which surprised me

morningpaper · 29/01/2006 15:00

Oh she knows the letters because I have a set on the fridge and we play with them sometimes and make words and talk about their letter sounds - she also likes reading the old Letterland book which I have a copy of

I never taught my ds but he came down from playing PC Play and Learn and rattled them off to me one day. I was amazed.

Hulababy · 29/01/2006 19:12

DD (3y9m) knows all her letter sounds and has done a fair while, but she doesn't know the alphabet order. I haven't bothered tellingher it all to be honest. Mond you she has started singing that alphabet at nursery recently, so I guess she will pick up the letter names/alphabet that way.

Blandmum · 29/01/2006 19:14

dd knew the alphabet, and would point out letters in signs etc, at the age of 18 months.

Ds finaly mastered it at about 4.5-5.0

They all differ

fsmail · 29/01/2006 21:19

Again my dd (18 months) knows a and s but my ds only mastered it at 4.5. However, he was the eldest so dd has been practicing with him when he does his homework and I think the second one may know what to do quicker because she brings me her book when ds has read his.

Hallgerda · 29/01/2006 21:32

Mine all learnt somewhere between the ages of 2 and 3. In all 3 cases, the first letter learnt was 'nake rather than A. I just showed them a lot of books and played with fridge letters - I told them both the letter name and the sound.

rarrie · 30/01/2006 19:56

My DD (2yrs 2 months) recognises about approx 6 different numbers written down and about 4 or 5 letters. Am ashamed to admit this, but she has picked her letters up purely from Countdown! DH and I watch it every day, and she stands by the tv and recites the letters after Carol. Have never asked nor suggested she does it, I think she likes the attention! Anyway, as we watch it every day, so she has picked up half a dozen letters and hald a dozen numbers or so. Not sure whether to be proud or embarrassed really!

My ds does not know the song and isn't interested in learning it (i've tried - he can't sing). But he can recognise all the letters in upper and lower case. He's 3.3
