Scottish Heinemann Maths

Calling Scottish primary teachers!

My DD (P6) will be starting at private school after summer. At the entrance assessment, she was a bit behind in maths and needs a little extra teaching to catch up. Both her current school and her new school use SHM.

I am perfectly capable of setting aside time every week to do maths with her but could anyone advise me;

How much time per week is reasonable?
Where to obtain copies of her maths books?
What level book to get?

Any other advice most welcome.

Thank you

My kids do Heinemann and afaik Pacific the level is the same as the school year - ie in p6 she would be on Heinemann level 6. If she is a bit behind I would start with (perhaps) level 5 and assess her from there. Her old school should be able to tell you where she was up to.

In terms of time per week (bearing in mind I am not a teacher) I would say half an hour twice or three times a week is plenty.

Thanks Miaou.

I will keep refreshing this message until the teachers finish for the day.

Suppose it is still to early in the day for teachers. Will keep trying over the weekend.

agree with M - DD is in p3. and working on H3

my daughter also uses these books at her new private school.
I have searches for them as well , but my advice is to ask the school how to help her, where to buy the books.
I am now using 'Schofiekd and Simms' books, they seem to be good for catching up.
They are for 7-11 years old. Each book is topic- based and starts at the beginning, which gives them confidence.
They give options of methods, but Heinemann sticks to traditional multiplictaion, divisions etc, like most private schools, so just forget about the other methods, unless your daughter prefers them.
But just stick to one way of multiplication etc, my children have been so confused at their old school!

I may be completely wrong Pacific, but I have never noticed any primary teachers on here from Scotland. There may be some lurking though I guess. I would try what Rianna says, and get advice from her school.

Hello! I'm sure I've seen some of the SHM books in Borders or Waterstones. As for levels, most P6 children would be expected to be working on SHM6 but it will depend on what 5-14 level she is at. I'm not teaching at the mo so might not be the best person to advise but I'm sure her old school will be able to advise you. Don't do too much with her as she will only get frustrated. I would agree with the half hour three times a week.

Thank you everyone. I had a busy weekend and this is the first chance to get back to the 'puter.

I am in Edinburgh....I think there is still a Smith's here. I will probably stick with SHMand just go over everything in level six.

If anyone else can advise, I will watch this thread for a while yet.

Thank you.
