Trying to work out where DD#1 is in relation to her peers (not for competitive reasons at all)

My DD has just mved from private school to state and her old school are in no hurry to forward her work books, reading diaries etc and her new school won't even give her a book bag and diary until they get them so two weeks later I'm in no mans land.
Any advice ???

I'd talk to the teacher again - I would have thought that it wouldn't take too long to assess her reading? Do you have any knowledge of what she was reading - I find that this site is useful for getting an idea of what level the different schemes are.

Presumably she is still in lessons in school?

cece · 24/01/2006 20:56

why are they waiting. vey odd. when we get new kids we sort them out with book bag, spelling lists within a couple of days. don't need old books to do that ???

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 24/01/2006 21:00

I don't understand that list - how do you work out what level it is, and what "are" the levels??

AngelaD · 24/01/2006 21:00

I was amazed when everyone came out on Friday with books and she had nothing, I went out and bought level 1, 2, 3 and 4 read at home oxford reading tree but i'm still none the wiser tbh

should have said she was reading the New Way pink books ???? If anyone has any idea i'd be very grateful.

How old is she ? New Way are Nelson Thornes but can't find specific info on the site, surely the school can though, or assess her from scratch. ds moved school at 7 and his teacher didn't even look at his reports and assessments - she preferred to leanr about him fr herself.

LIZS · 24/01/2006 21:21

There is an example here whcih suggests for age 4 1/2-5 years . Does that sound about right ? Or have a look at page 16 ish of ladymuck's link for equivalents.

AngelaD · 24/01/2006 21:30

She's 5 and 4 months.
TBH I was already worried sick i'd made the right choice about moving her and now i feel really upset by the lack of initive shown by the teacher, hope this just a glitch.

I would guess that she's somewhere around level 1 on the list from Ladymuck's link - my dd has just gone up to New Way red books, and looking back in her reading record, a lot of the ones she was reading from other schemes at the same time are level 1.

Oh no I'd just decided it was level 3 !!
Are the books in school the same as the read at home books ?
I have level 1 here and she's way beyond that (the read at home one anyway).

Just read to her and give her nice books. It will be fine.

ladymuck · 24/01/2006 22:10

QoQ - not sure that the levels particularly mean much - it just tries to get the books from different schemes (Jolly phonics, Oxford Reading Tree etc) into line with each other, so that when you inherit books from other schemes you have an ideas as to where they fit in your normal scheme.

Eg ds1 is on New Way : pink. Tonight's book was "Two folk Tales" which comes out as level 13 on that list so equivalent to some of the ORT Level 4/5 books or the Jolly readers yellow books.

But regardless of that it is for her school to be sorting out formal reading, not you.

mandieb · 25/01/2006 19:27

My sons school does new way and I do reading there ,to me pink level sounds about right . please do not rush reading as it dosnt help in the long run .

mandieb · 25/01/2006 19:28

ps I was ready to kill that " Fat Pig " by the end of pinl level . LOL

ladymuck · 25/01/2006 19:51

Fat Pig has now been converted to Pat the Pig. Ds1 giggles like mad whenever he finds one of the older less pc versions though.

I think that AngleaD is trying to work out where she is on ORT if she was on pink level for New Way.

my dd has just changed school too, & her teacher (like LIZSs dss teacher) just assessed her from scratch & didnt pay attention to what her old teacher had sent on.
it must be frustrating for you that the teacher is doing this
